You can put 2x2GB but you won't see the full 4 GB due to various issues.

If you don't have a need for a little over 3 GB of usable memory, get the 2x1GB. It will be cheaper and you will see the complete amount of memory.

If you are running a 64-bit operating system, you can use up to 4 GB of RAM.
If you are running a 32-bit operating system, you can use up to 3 GB of RAM.

Crucial memory scan states that my 6400 will only hold 1gb per slot and a max of 2 combined.

I am confused, support.dell.com says the E1505 can only support 2gb MAX (1gb per slot), is this not true? and I run more then 1gb per slot (i.e. 2x2gb = 4gb total)?

Aside from the OS issues of only seeing 3 or 3.5 gb, is there a reason why the E1505 can't use more then 2gb max? Or is this BS?

yes its true. you can not stick a 2gb stick in there, it supports 1gb per stick at max.

HOWEVER, the poster who said 32 bit lets 3 gbs ram and 64 bit lets 4gb is not entirely true. 32 bit lets between 3.2 and 3.5 gbs of ram (depends on laptop) while 64 bit vista basic supports up to 8 max, home premium supports 16 max, and vista business, enterprise, and ultimate support up to 128gb.

anyways, you are stuck with a max of 2 gbs (2x1gb) in your laptop max.

Even if the full 3GB or 4GB shows up, is it effective? Does it count toward your computer processing? Or is it all show?
