my e1705's fan basically woke me up at 5:30 am in the morning because it was going <high speed> <split second off/low speed> <back to high speed> every 10 seconds. i think something is wrong with the right side of the laptop. when i use i8kfan and turn the fan on the right to high, it seems to run at slower speeds (or at least not as fast as the left one). the right sided of the keyboard also feels a warmer than the left, and the surface its sitting on (my desk) actually feels a tad warm.

is there any way to check the fan speed of the gpu? this is just so weird because i basically reformatted my hard drive like just yesterday.... i'm not sure if this is related but i have gotten sudden auto-restarts when i play graphic intensive games like need for speed carbon.... also i can't seem to open nvidia's temperature detection/logging program that comes with the drivers. the option is simply not there in control panel (and yes i know where it is supposed to be...) i'm prolly going to call dell to see what the problem is later today...

/edit oh and i downloaded ntunes, and the program basically refuses to run (completely freezes the laptop when i try) and theres no option to uninstall it in the add/remove program menu or anywhere else. (i'm using the dell drivers btw)

Your BIOS fan control and I8kfan are fighting each other. Recheck your I8kfan settings. Your BIOS high limits always have priority and you risk damage trying to defeat it. Search through the posts for user settings if you wish, if your read the manual your other questions will be answered.

Itunes works fine for me, sounds like a bad install or your missing something from your drive format.

thats what i figured at first so i uninstalled i8kfan and toyed around with it, turning it to off at times. its the left fan thats sputtering the most, but as for the right fan, i can barely feel and hear it being on. its like when i put both fan on high, the left fan roars while the right fan feels like its barely even on low.

and its ntunes, not itunes :p its supposed to be a program officially from nvidia that lets you overclock and possibly check the temperature/gpu fan speed.

i have a question, is the option to check and log the gpu temperature available in the dell drivers? i could of sworn that i've seen that i've seen that option before.... maybe it was during the time when i was using the default nvidia official driver instead of dell's.

ntunes, lol, sorry looked like a typo.

you can use your dell Nvidia drivers, turn on control panel, to log your temps and to calibrate i8kfan. I find i8kfan usefull to run gpu fan on low for day to day stuff and to log OC tempertures during gaming.

Let us know if ntunes lets you unlock your gpu.

thats the thing.... i dont think the temperature logging/viewing function is available to me. i'm pretty sure it was available in the past because i've seen it before but its simply not there anymore. i even searched through the help topic and the instruction instructed me to go to nvidia control panel -- > 3d settings --> temperature, but the only option available there for me are adjust image setting and manage 3d launch settings....

anyway i figured i'll give dell a call to see what they can do. they offer to send me a free box so i can send it to them and they'll replace whatever that is supposedly broken. i'm a college student so i'm going to have to wait till after the semester (mid December) before i actually get a chance to send it.

You need to install video drivers off the Nvidia website to get the temperature reading feature. The drivers you get from Dell don't have that feature.

    crazeman?..

so.. do you have any chance to check what happen with you right side fan?.. i have an XPS m1710 and i had the same problems, but i us the I8kGUIfan.. thing.. and it works fine.

i feel a bit scared with that. thing .. BIOS and I8kGUI fan fight one against other.. is that true?

    thanks.

hmm can anyone who has a e1705 and i8kguifan dig up some numbers for me? :p

usually my cpu and gpu temperature is pretty low/normal... but what are you guys getting for the normal memory temperature and chipset temperature? mine is peaking at 58 degrees for both, im just curious to see if its high or not.

cpu around 35-50 but will peak 65C during game untill fans kick on.

GPU; +8C offset for I8kfan, one fan, #2, on low 50-54C. During long games, 78-82C with current O.C.

Let I8kafan log all your temps for a day or two to get your baseline readings.

at some point my fans were turned on automatically on the bios and i thought it was weird that my cpu and gpu temperature were relatively low (cpu was at 39 degrees without any offsetting, and gpu was at 49 or 50). the fan still stayed on for a good 10-15 minutesfor no apparent reason but i noticed that the chipset/memory temperature was nearly at 60 degrees

Not a problem. I just do not like how the dell bios let's things simmer before stirring the pot. So, I feel a bit better just running fan #2 on low and quiet for normal use.
