I noticed the XPS line are sold with 2GB mem sticks. From the specs, it looks like they should work in the E1705. Where can I find these for sale?

I'm not sure that the E1705 supports 4GB of RAM. Here's a link I found anyway:
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.a...m=202289847&Type=PE&Category=Comp&dcaid=17379
They are a lot more than two 1GB sticks (~$150).
I used Froogle to find it. -
Was thinking that might be the case. However, here is a link that hints at the 4GB support
If you look at the .pdf version of the Owners Manual in the Specifications section. You'll see the 4GB limit.

Chaz is right - since the e1705 maxes at 2GBs, don't spend on a single 2GB stick, especially since its so expensive
-
The two systems are similar, but that is one major difference. The 1705 is limited to 2gb even though the .pdf manual states otherwise. I'm not sure if there is a difference in the hardware, or if Dell might have put a cap on it in the BIOS or something like that.

Has anyone tried a 2GB stick to see what would happen? I'd be surprised if it didn't work.
The Inspiron 9400 also shows 2GB as a memory limit on the Dell Specifications section. Also note that I got to this particular manual by clicking on the manual link for the E1705. As far as I can tell the two machines should be identical. According to the chipset being using in the PC the 945PM, it should support 4GB.
I'm guessing it's a memory chip availability issue. Maybe Dell doesn't have enough to go around so they don't offer it on the "value" systems.

I'm sure the notebook will read 4GB of RAM; if somebody wants to fund it I will use my computer as an experiment for the sake of science.
There is really no reason that it wouldn't, as the E1705 uses the same motherboard as the M1710, and it's an option on the M1710. It's the same situation as the 7900GTX is. It will work fine in the E1705; people have done it, but if they offer all of the performance features on the "entertainment" series notebooks, who is going to buy an XPS? -
Interesting that it's hard to find these 2GB modules. I haven't seen too many available.

I have to agree with above. It seems that the XPS is just an inspiron with a pretty case. and a few options they don't give on the inspiron at a much bigger price tag.
I just went to www.dell.com and configured an E1705 and a M1710 to be technically the same 2600duo, 7900GS, 2gigs ram, 80mHr battery, 100gig 7200rpm. With an easily availible 30% off coupon
E1705=1925
M1710=3289
at that price difference you could buy 7900GTX install it, put a 2nd pipe in and sell the 7900GS.
I assume if you can use 4gigs of ram in the M1710, you could in the E1705 I assume it's a matter of flashing a bios if anything.
