Just to get a comparison of the two top hard drives available for the M1530 right now and to get an idea of the differences between the two, here are the two benchmark tests for your comparison and review. Credit goes to Yitzer for the 320GB, whereas I tested the 250GB.
Samsung 250GB 7200RPM
Seagate Momentus 320GB 7200RPM
Just an overview, the difference in access time is the 320 beating the 250 by 1.5 seconds in average access time. On average, the 320GB is 12.8MB faster than the 250GB.
The minimum transfer rate of the 320GB is 38.2 whereas the 250GB is a little less than half at 15.6MB/s. The maximum range is much smaller as the 250GB is at 80.1 versus the 89.7 in the 320GB. On average,
The burst rate of the 320GB is very impressive and is over DOUBLE the amount of the 250GB with the 320 having a 141.3MB/sec whereas the 250 has a burst rate of 68.7MB/sec. 320 beats 250 by a whopping 72.6MB/sec.
For those who care about performance of their computer overall, surprisingly the 320GB takes up LESS of the CPU than the 250GB with the 320GB only using up 4.3% versus the 250GB using up 12.0 percent meaning the 320GB uses only 1/3 of the amount of processing power which means higher performance in all your other tasks.
Quite a difference here as one can see.

Glad I ordered a laptop with 320GB 7,200 RPM then
-
Wow. I didn't think the difference would be so big.
Very helpfull +rep -
Is the 320 a Hitachi or a Seagate?
-
320GB is the Seagate Momentus 7200.3.
-
There is a big difference between those two drives,
Correct me if I m wrong, but the 250GB drive is tested under Vista and the 320GB under XP?
Woud I be right in saying that the low scores could be attributed to Vista being busy caching files to ram / general phantom Vista processes etc....? -
The only way you can compare benchmark results like this is if they were done on the same system with the same OS configuration.
-
anywayz i am going for the 320gig since i use XP....
cheers for the info Forte.... -
-
The 320GB 7200RPM Seagates are only available for the XPS line and Alienware. You cannot buy them as a separate part. It'd take a while for them to be released for purchase individually on newegg and stuff.
-
The 250GB 7200RPM that came in my 1530 last week is a Seagate.
-
getting it for £148 shipped....probably might get around £70-80 for my momentus 7200.2....so i think it is a fair deal....!!

I had bought 3 momentus 7200.2s from this guy....and a 7K60 and i know he is genuine....just talking him into getting me the 5 years manufacturer's warranty....waiting for his reply..!! -
Like I said, they are coming out in a few months. Retailers may list them, but they wont be in stock for a while. Notice 0 quantity available when you use their stock checking system. Kind of like Final Fantasy XIII. Its listed on amazon and best buy for preorder, but the game isnt coming till near the end of december or maybe next year.
The momentus' the XPS line is using are the 7200.3s, NOT 7200.2s. -
-
Until retailers have them in stock, its a moot point.
-
yeah....the ebay fellas have it in stock....i talked to him if he cud give me some discount if i bought two....and he agreed for a 25% discount since i just bought an old IDE hdd for my mom's deskpro....and also considering my past transactions with him....!!

Exclusivitywise, The 80GB PS3 is VERY popular, yet it is only exclusive to North America right now. Its not available in Europe, China, or anywhere else. Not even in Japan!
Its not really released at all in the USA yet. Sure it could be preparing for release in Canada, but thats not the US and it still isnt available in ANY retailers. Dont count on something to be actually released until they are IN STOCK. It is still in pending release.
Instead you have to get them from some ebayer who was able to get some of the OEMs OUTSIDE of the US where Seagate can't stop them. -
well....and it is obvious that the retail items wud be at a premium as compared to the oems....
-
Im referring to supply. NO retailer actually has them yet except for a select few ebayers outside the US.
-
So I can't get one yet? darn.
Anyway,they should be close to 250$ so that's a tad expensive. -
You can get one, but you'd have to order it preconfigured with it from Dell or Alienware.
-
I'm generally happy with my 320G 5400rpm hdd, so I'll stick to it for now... hdd speed is not the bottleneck in most cases anyway.
-
Guys,
I ordered a 320gb 7200RPM Seagate Momentus 7200.3 drive from Dell Sparesfor my uncle's m1330. Dell P/N U093F. Retail price was 244.95 + shipping and handling. -
-
Weird. I guess I just got a bad S&P Rep. She said she couldnt find it and said the part was only available with the configuration and not for individual order... she was american too. Though she did seem a bit airy. Ah well.
-
Did you call Software and Peripherals (usually what Dell refers to as S&P) or spare parts? Spare parts actually won't be able to find the part as it won't show up in the database for some reason. I actually had to pull some strings and consult some of my contacts to get the correct part number. Then called Spare Parts and gave the part number and placed the order.
-
Yes, they transffered me to spare parts/software and peripherals. She couldnt find it. I told her the M1530 nand she looked and saw it on the site too, though she put me on hold for a few minutes and said she couldnt find it. She asked me if it was western digital and I said no. She then said some of the parts are just available for a configuration and so she is not able to find the actual part because of that reason.
-
You can also look here.
-
Nah, thats the 320GB 5400RPM drive. I'm talking of the 320GB 7200RPM.
-
I know, It gets updated when a new product comes out. So hopefully they will put in the 7200rpm 320gb HDD soon.
-
What is the price difference between the two?
-
Forte,
Did you give the part number that I provided? Tell them to order that drive for you. That drive is a confirmed 2.5" 7200RPM 7200.3 Seagate 320gb drive. -
Not yet, will do sometime later this week.
