folks, is it worth paying the extra $s to get the faster processors in your opinion (I have the XPS 170 in mind)? Will there be much noticable differnece in performance between them?

    Thanks

Probably not. Get the 7200RPM hard drive.

Its better to get the 2 GHz. You would see a more increase with more ram. A bigger hard drive helps but more ram would be faster! :)

Zazonz you beat me by a second... :) :)

usually better to get the step down from the fastest to save significant $'s for little performance loss, Intel always prices it's top end chip higher just 'cause it's the newest. Anything above 2.0GHz is going to be good enough for gaming.

Get the 2GHz as it will save you a lot of money. The XPS will run much faster with 2GB of RAM and a 7200RPM hard dirve.

I had an option to go for a 2.0GHz PM when I bought my laptop, but I decided that it wasn't worth the the 100 bucks - I got 1GB of RAM instead, it increases performance much more.

The CPU is the least important component for games - I'd take a 1.6GHz PM with a 128MB X700 over a 2.26GHz PM with an X600.

Not really, I would get the 2.0 and save money, also avoid the 7200 drives, loud and clicky, the 5400's offer almost the same performance and probably not a discernable difference, the 20 or more gigs of extra space you get with a 5400 drive over the 7200 drives will however, make a discernable difference.

My 7200 is not loud and clicky. The 7200 offers better performance in my opinion.
