    Hi there

Im in the UK and reiceved my vostro with the terrible AUO WXGA+ 1440x900 screen with truelife. It certainly does look as bad as people say, infact even worse.

After spending about 2 hours on the phone to Dell today they finally agreed to ship out a new system for me, however, I can't be doing with the hassle of returning another grainy screen, so I opted for the WXGA 1280x800 screen, with truelife. I am just wondering, does this type of screen suffer from the awful grainieness the wxga+ suffers from? Does the truelife affect it?

Also, he said he would upgrade to vista ultimate for free (as the screen is now cheaper) and gave me no option of getting home premium. Now, I am wondering is ultimate a memory hog? Does it put more strain on the RAM and the processor?

If it does then Im going to ring up again and ask for premium or my money back, but it really is the screen I am worried about, as I am off to university soon, so if the replacement is grainy then I wont be able to return it.

    Thanks in advance
    Dave

The screen will be grainy. Vista ultimate is the same as premium just added some "business" features which you don't need to use. Just dont buy any turbo memory to speed up the system, waste of money.

I hear many ppl complaining with Vostro screens rather than the Inspirons.... So I believe that with the Vostro chances of grainness again are more than with the Inspirons.... Choosing WXGA might lower the chance of getting a grainy one too ;)

So even the WXGA screens can be grainy?? Would truelife add to the risk? Or do you think I should just go with the matte display?

This thread ( HERE) suggests that Dell isn't using AUO screens anymore. Good news for everyone!

Matte screen will always be little grainy because the matte film which is on the screen is not clear, is grainy to make it matte. Laptop itself is perfect, 9 out of 10 but screen is crap, you can go to pcworld or currys and try to find grainy screen there but it will be difficult because 95% of glossy screens are very clear, even on very cheap laptops. Grainy screen is rare issue so I'm very surprise that Dell suffer from that problem. Save more money or wait for discount and go for Sony FZ11Z.

So you are saying that going for the wxga 1280x800 WITHOUT truelife will increase the chances of it being grainy?

Ok, well after some extensive looking on the forums it seems that the WXGA screens seem to be OK. I think im just going to keep it.

So just to confirm about Vista ultimate now, it is just the same as home premium, but with a few business apps included? It wont run slower or use any more RAM than home premium?

Have you even read owners comments recently? They all say the screen is perfect - especially WXGA users.

The Sony FZ11Z is a complete rip off. Firstly the highest amount of RAM it can register is 2GB RAM, it has a measly 4200RPM hard disk, an 8400GT which is no where near as good as an 8600GT and also an average battery life. Yes it does have blu ray but with only an WXGA screen, you won't get full HD quality except if you take the hassle in buying a HDMI cable and connecting it up to a HD TV. With all that, its ~£300 more than the Vostro which has better spec.

The trulife WXGA screen will be just fine. Even if it is AUO it still be fine as all of the owners comments I've read, say its perfect.

To your last question, I wouldn't think it would slow your computer down at all. Maybe it'll take up more Hard Disk space because of the increased number of utilites included but as I've said, it shouldn't slow your computer down.

Btw, here is a table which compares all three Vista editions - CLICKY

I have WXGA trulife made by LPL not AUO and it is grainy. Just dont give a sh... that wxga will be good. Do you have inspiron/vostro wxga trulife with clear screen? If yes, who made it
