Does it make any difference between 2 x 512 vs 1 x 1G? Will my Vostro 1500 try to use 2 identical RAMs in parallel or otherwise do some optimization?

you will get better performance if you have them paired because it enables dual channel. However, getting 1 x1gb stick allows you to upgrade to 2gb easier because you only have to buy 1 more stick instead of 2 new sticks.
