Besides the better look of the 1720 and the dx10, are there any material reasons I would chose a 1720 over a 1705?

    Thanks!!!

1705 at least had a geforce 7900gs which is better than a 8600gt, yet its dx9.
also the 1705 might have a less "grainy" screen, im not sure but thats what ppl been sayin and all.

And the 1720 doesn't have DVI or DHMI... hence the question. I have no problem picking up a 1705 refurb because I'll grab a 3 year warrenty anyway. I'm just trying to see if I missed something that would make me want the 1720.

I thought that T7300 was Santa Rosa? The 1705 offers it.

To find out if your newly purchased laptop has the new Santa Rosa Chipset the trick will be to look and see if it's an odd numbered one, such as T7300 (2.00GHz), T7500 (2.20GHz) or T7700 (2.40GHz).

I think the 8600GT with DDR2 is considered mid-range and the 7900gs is considered the lower end of high-range.

the 7900gs is a lot better, 256-bit interface can play oblivion on high very well. I mean dont get me wrong the 8600gt is a good card, which is what ill get in my 1520. Yet i see no reason to buy a 1720 since the video cards are the same with more weight due to size of the 1720.

if the 8600M GT and go 7900gs are anything like their respective desktop counterparts, than no 7900gs is not alot better.
8600GT(desktop) performs significantly better than 7900GS(desktop) in Oblivion, and depending on the review site in Stalker, Rainbow Six Las Vegas as well.

Still with the 1705 you CAN upgrade the card to a 7950. Is the 1720 even upgradable? Will it be?

Besides, is the video card in the 1720 really a 8600 GT? I thought everyone was saying with the DDR2 it's not really a GT hence everyone is asking for some money back on their orders.

yes it is, but where are you seeing that the 1705 has the t7300... it was basically the biggest thing besides the redesgin in the inpspiron case that the new inspirons featured santa rosa

Actually, I was wrong. Opps. Okay...so Santa Rosa and a cool new case are the reasons to get a 1720 over a 1705...

With notebooks this is not the case. Since our dells have DDR2 (800Mhz) memory they are slower, and even before that, the 7900gs is a little better.

So does that make it a wash with the Santa Rosa chips in the 1720 or does the 1720 have the edge with the new processor?

Can the 1720 have a better Hard Drive than the 1705? Or are they pretty much the same in that department?
