I read, I think at the Cnet review and from a customer review somewhere that the 1720's touchpad has a slight lag to it. I'd like to hear from other users if this is true and if so, how irritating is it? This is the kind of thing that would probably end up driving me insane after a while. Thanks.

theres no lag on mine, and theres sensitivity/speed settings for that to sort it out exactly how you like it the same as all laptops/mouses, also theres driver updates

how long have dell been making laptops ? ask yourself do you think theyd pump out machines like the 1720 with crap touchpads ? !

that's exactly why i was shocked when i heard about it. glad to hear you have no issues with it. maybe it was just an early driver issue?

I just bought a 1720 with the same specs listed above and I have noticed a lag in the touchpad. I have adjusted the settings but I don't think it has anything to do with this because the arrow just stays there and after 2-4 seconds it starts moving again. I haven't tried updating the drivers yet...but you think that a new machine would work and have the latest drivers.

Another issue that I noticed is that the screen goes black for 2 seconds sometimes where you are doing something and then comes back...also annoying. I have heard of others with the same problem and they seem to think it's the nvidia drivers. I tried updating them but the problem is still there. Not impressed with the laptop because of these 2 minor issues. When you spend that kind of money you shouldn't have to deal with these annoyances even if they are minor.

I have the same problem here. Just had a Dell tech out on Wednesday to change the palm rest (touchpad). Touchpad still lags for 2-4 seconds. Newest drivers installed but still no good.

I am thinking of doing a clean install of Vista to eliminate the possibility of some program causing lag. If I find a solution, I'll post here.

    EDIT: Grammer corrections.

    Update:

Some progress but still not 100% fixed. I did a clean install of Vista and drivers only but it still lagged.
After playing around with this most of the day, I have been able to get some improvement. Here's a list of what I've done:

    Installed BIOS A04
    Reinstalled latest touchpad drivers
    Disabled DragLock, TouchCheck, and Scrolling
    Adjusted Sensitivity

Like I said, it still lags, just not as often.

Polsta and other not having problems: What is the driver version and settings you are using? I know that people will have these set to their specific needs but I am thinking that the problem maybe related to these two things and not the hardware itself.

    Thanks,

Apologies for resurrecting this but being that this thread is one of the top 5 results from Google when searching "insprion 1720 touchpad lag", I decided to update it.

Unfortunately I am still battling this problem. I did find a thread over at DellCommunity.com which describes the same problem. The thread is

    freezing touchpad

If you are experiencing this problem, please indicate so at the thread above. I am hoping that this problem can be solved or by bringing enough attention to this problem, Dell will look into the problem further.

    Thanks,
    robert2513

    EDIT: Changed last paragraph.

the 1720 touchpad sucks... night and day when i switch back and fourth between my e1705 and 1720... its a pleasure to use the e1705 after using the 1720.

and where are the "tapzones" feature??

I don't notice any lag, but I do notice ghosting on the screen, thats my only complaint. I have my refresh rate set to 60hz, but every game is limited to 50 fps when I have vsync enabled. Strange?

Is it a Synaptics touchpad? If so, are you guys using the Dell drivers or the Synaptics ones?

Sorry for not replying everyone. I never got an email notification saying that there were replies in the thread. Going to have to add that to the list.

    Anyway...

Except for the touchpad problem, I don't think the 1720 is all that bad. The number pad is the biggest plus in my book. ;)

SpeedyMods, so far, all I've seen is Alps touchpads with the 1720. Using the latest driver does not correct the problem. At one point, I did try the Synaptics drivers but the problem still occurred. I am waiting for some parts from Dell that will hopefully correct the problem but we'll see.

Happy Easter everyone! Hope yours is safe and candy-filled. :D
