1720 is just a bigger version of 1520. I would get the 1520, because the 1720 is impractical carry around. 15 inches laptop is just about the right size.

but i wouldnt be carring it around.
my main concern is that a lot of people say that it is a 50/50 chance to get a grainy screen on the 1400x... resolution and this resolution comes default on the 1720.
if i get a bad scrren i wouldnt have time to get it repaced as i will me leaving the county

If you're not going to be moving it around much, the bigger screen is always nice.

what about the grainyness, will there be a greater chance of a bad screen on the 1720 gather than the 1520

In my experience, you have a better chance of graininess with the 1520.
I had a 1520 that I returned because of the bad screen, and now have a 1720 with a good screen.

But I have the impression that Dell has been working on the screen problem and using more of the LG Philips screens (which tend to be good) than the SEC or AUO screens (that tend to be grainy -- mine was a SEC). Lately I am seeing more posts from people who receive their 1520's and are happy with their screen. So what was true of the 1520 a month or two ago may no longer be true.

If you are planning on getting a 1520 you might want to wait. On this thread they are saying a new 1525/1526 model will be coming out soon http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=189930

From the pic on that article, it looks like they moved the headphone jacks up front.. That will probably fix the headphone jack noise that people have been having with the 1520. Also, it will have HDMI!! So it looks like the new 1525/26 will be what the 1520 should have been in the first place. The main complaints with the 1520 was its bulk, headphone jacks and lack of HDMI.. From that pic, it looks like the chasis is slimmer, the jacks are moved, and it now has HDMI.. Hmmmm sure sounds like a fix using a new model from where I sit.

I enjoy the size of my 1720, and don't mind carrying it around; it's not any heavier than a bag of books.

Going from a 6 year old 15" Inspiron to the new 1720 was amazing. I love the big screen and numeric keypad. It is pretty heavy to be lugging around, but weighs close to my old laptop, so that's not too bad for a 17" laptop I reckon!

I wouldn't base your decision on the grainy screen issue. It seems to be a lottery across the whole range of Dell's. Hopefully they're getting it sorted out by now. Base your decision on what you really want. You also have the 'total satisfaction guarantee' to fall back on as well, so if you don't like what you choose, you can send it back as long as it's within the time period.
