So what are the chances that dell will release a new graphics card for the 1720 in the future, making me able to upgrade my current card (8600m gt)?

The question isnt will dell have new cards in the future but rather will those cards connectors, cooling pipes, shape of the card etc... fit your computer.

I wouldn't necessarily hold my breath but its possible.

I'm hoping that Dell releases a new card for the 1720 that will have the proper shape and cooling to fit into mine.

I'd be incredibly overjoyed if you could. An 8800 of any flavour would make me smile.
My better half would be unimpressed. Any money that I try to spend on gadgets make her frown :p

I wish... but it looks like Dell is going in a different direction with mainstream gaming. The 1520 is no longer offered with an 8600m, and neither is its successor, the 1525. It seems that if you want to get your game on, Dell wants you to migrate over to the XPS line.

My biggest gripe of the 1720 is that it doesn't come with a GDDR3 8600M or 8700M, as expected for 17" notebooks. I don't know, but it seems to be the bottleneck of the entire system, even when Penryns like T9300 being introduced into the system in April. And yes, reviews show that they're as good as the extreme editions without any form of processor overclocking.

I don't think they'll come up with a replacement for 8600m as I know Dell will definitely sell a newer model with either a 9 series card or something this year.

But on the other hand, c'mon, it's a 17" model with huge changes possible, if they can give a detailed disassembly and removal instruction of the graphics card as shown in the Dell Support site, why not an upgrade? May be quite possible.

Anyway, I'm still looking forward to it.
