I am having a problem with my 1720 for the last few months. It just shuts off randomly, and this happens when it is on battery. However, when it shuts down, there is still a lot of charge left. In the latest episode, there was 49% charge left! I also checked the battery meter under the laptop and three of the 6 lights lit up! It has been only about 10 months since I bought this laptop, and everything else is fine. What should I do? Thanks in advance.

Check your Windows power settings. There should be a Critical Battery level, which normally shuts your computer down when the battery reaches that level. You may have somehow set it to 50%.

This only happens on battery power correct?

Correct. I checked the power settings and nothing is changed. I talked to an agent and he said to reinstall the bios, but I doubt that will improve anything, as it started happening just a few months ago.

Reinstall the BIOS? Christ, I can't believe Dell actually pays people to tell you that. :/

Haha. Hey! With my Studio 15 the fan would spin up to high speed when the temperatures were getting higher but it would never spin down, even after I stopped gaming or watching a movie. I contacted Dell about this and they told me to reinstall the BIOS. It actually did solve that problem. However, I do not think that reinstalling the BIOS applies in this situation. I say give it a go anyways, but don't expect miracles. :)
