I also ordered the Midnight Blue color and when I called a representative, he said my order was delayed a week (ordered on 7/15, estimated ship date was 7/31, now 8/7) because of the color... What are your specs?

Yeah, they need to really expedite this. Put pressure on their suppliers or whatever because this is annoying.

I ordered 7/16 with an ED of 8/1 but, after several cancellations by me or Dell, finally had an order that stuck on 7/20 with an ED of 8/13. Well that is sort of annoying but I would really like if this had a quicker turn around than one month. I waited until July to order because I presumed that there would be an initial rush and an immediate delay but two months in is a bit pitiful.

just talked to dell for 2nd time this week

"have checked the updated information for the order. There is no part delay for the order now. However, the order is delayed due to general manufacturing backlog. As a result this estimated shipping date has been changed to 08/28/2007"

I ordered a pink 1720 on 7/18, and it's been in the build process ever since. This will be my 6th laptop from Dell. I've also bought a few desktops and expensive printers from them. Never had a problem. I always got my orders w/in 10 days of ordering. Now my ESD has been changed from 7/31 to 8/7. I called Dell yesterday and they swore it was shipping on 7/31, even though it was still in the build process. Sheesh. They did give me free overnight shipping, but if I have to wait forever to get it, I'm going to be VERY upset. My current Dell laptop is about to die on me and I'm lost w/o my laptop. After reading the posts on this forum, I'm terrified they're gonna keep pushing the date back.

When I look at my account, the order status has an ESD of 8/7, yet when I call the automated number, it just says it's in the build stage and that there's no other info available. I'm getting scared that the 8/7 date is a load of BS.

I ordered on July 4th, and I'm still in the build stage. It's supposed to ship by the 3rd, but at this point I'll probably get another delay. If so, I'm gonna have to cancel and get something else before school starts

Has anyone had a major delay with a jet black, no webcam 1720? I'm thinking about ordering soon, but won't if Dell won't get it to me for over a month as seems to be the case with many orders.

What I was told today about my Flamingo Pink 1721 order that was rescheduled
for the second time to 8/28:
"08/02/2007 11:51:20AM Agent (Ashish Sharma): " the delay is being caused due the cover of LCD screen. The particular item is not available and is causing further delay in the shipment of the order."

I was advised to CALL the Order Modification Department. (BTW, they can't
"modify", but can do a "delete-add"!)

Upon talking to a very nice agent named Alfred, I was advised that the
most available color - black - still had an Est Ship date of 8/27.

I have the same problem-o. I was considering cancelling this morning when I found out I had another LONG delay.....now I am not sure what I am going to do. Heck...I have waited this long I am going to suck it up and wait....I am going on vacation Sunday for 10 days so hopefully when I get back there will be some GOOD news! I think by the sounds of things...every color has a wait time...

Glad to hear you didn't cancel. The only thing worse than the waiting is to wait and get nothing out of it. I've read on a few threads that people who were delayed until 8/28 are now in boxing.

I would really hate to be a Dell employee right now. They've got to be under a lot of stress. No one wants to do business this way.

Not sure this will help or not, but I will post it anyways...

I purchased a Vostro 1700 thru my Dell rep on 7/27 due date of 8/16. Surprisingly I recieved my order today 8/2, so hopefully your guys due dates are way off.

    I ordered a Vostro 1700, T7300 2.0GHz, WUXGA, 8600m GT, webcam

ok, well talked to a friend who works at dell in software support and in regards to the inspirion this is what he told me,

"we can't expedite new systems right now. On top of that, it may be even longer as we have an industry wide shortage on 14, 15, and 17 inch lcds"

"but it looks like your order is being held at manufacturing for parts configuration, so that might be the case"

sorry is bad news but i would consider this info exactly what the problem is, no matter what the reps say. trying to find out from him now if he has any real idea on when screens will be coming in, will post back with anything else

I thought about this at first, but then thought that it would be an even bigger nightmare for them if they ARE doing this b/c imagine how jammed up they'd be with a ton of ppl complaining, troubleshooting, and returning their systems while all of us are just ordering. I ordered mine yesterday and it has a 9/7 ship date. One rep I talked to said that they expect 3-5 days for processing and then 3-5 days to ship and if mine takes longer than that, then it is because of material shortage delays. So it looks like I may be in for it too.

My shipping date was suppose to be August 2nd. I talked to one rep and they told me it would be on time. Mind you my order was still in the production stage and the shipping date was within 48hrs. I called the day after my estimated shipping date and they told me 2 more weeks. I haven't had any online updates at all, not a single e-mail. Dell seems to be quite the mess these days. I will be out of the country soon and I didn't think my order would take most of the summer. They can't even offer me anything to aid the situation. ie. overnight shipping, as I was told it isn't an option. This is really getting on my nerves.

    Alright heresmy story:

I ordered my 1720 on July 2nd. My first ESD was like th 19th. then i got a email saying it was delayed to the 27th. then i got on the phone and talked with dell and they said it was delayed again untill aug 2nd. yesterday i got an email saying it was delayed untill aug 28th. i was like wtffff. So i was on the phone for at least an hour talking to these stupid indians that work for dell that i cant understand at all. One of the ladies asked me if MS office is an OS!!! LOL. Anyways, for all this trouble im going thru i managed to get free low jack for 2yrs and free MS office. Still this is crzy, dell needs to pick up the pace. Ive never had trouble with them before this.

I move into my dorm on the 22nd and start school on the 27th so that really sucks. Gonna have no comp for about a week

It makes me glad that I ordered a black one off the bat... but...I was talking about it this morning with a friend of mine, and what I don't understand is why Dell doesn't try and create a really happy customer base by widely OVERestimating the production time, thus delivering Scotty-style miracle engineering by shipping, for example, a week ahead of the "projected" date?

^^^ Actually, I believe that they are doing that in general. It seems like their estimates tend to be about 1 month out and there are a number of folks who have gotten them within 2 wks. We just hear the most from people who are experiencing delays beyond 1 month. That's my read anyway.

I chatted with a rep who confirmed, but until we get it in hand, I remain
    skeptical over such mis-information.

Microsoft Office (through microsoft's home use program -- for office enterprise): $19.99
LoJack for Laptops (2 yr -- estimate, based on $49.99 for 1 yr and $99.99 for 3 yrs): $74.99
Being able to repeatedly delay a customer and keep him happy with only a $94.99 value: priceless

milk them for more lol. i'd be so angry with that many delays.

Yep, mine was supposed to ship today. I got an email this morning saying (in part) that " I would like to inform you that the order is delayed and will not be shipped until 08/28/2007 for the Notebook model number 1720 under the order number XXXXXXXXX as the WXGA TL LCD is backordered. I would suggest you to contact the order modification department at 1-800-247-2076 and get the monitor replaced by a different model number so that it ships as early as possible.

I knew this was gonna happen. This is my 2nd delay. Hopefully there won't be a 3rd.

Yeah, I had the same question. I think they're referring to the color. I'm not changing it tho. I'm scared to now. If I cancel this order and re-order another color, who's to say that I'm going to get the NEW color any quicker than I'm going to get my current color (which is pink)? So I'm going to just hang in there. I'm not confidant that I'm gonna get a different color any quicker.

Maybe, but I'm like you. I'm just gonna wait. I can't help but think that a lot of people are canceling and reordering black, which could possibly result in another wait. When I do a configuration of my system in the color black, it has a preliminary ship date of 8/23. Plus, I really want my pink!! :)

I just hope that a couple things come of this (but I am not hopeful for either): That Dell finally decides to re-vamp their customer service which has been much-maligned for some time and that they plan their releases better in the future. That being said, even with those changes, I do not think I am likely to be buying from Dell in the future. I was going to buy two laptops from them but now I will just wait for the first one I ordered and take my business elsewhere. Maybe Lenovo although I abhor their design and I am not a big fan of thinkpads from previous experience.

    I ordered a 1720 with the following:

    - Intel Core 2 Duo T7700, 2.4GHz
    - 2GB, DDR2
    - 17.0 inch display (1920 x 1200)
    - 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600
    - 24X COMBO CD-RW/DVD
    - Sound Blaster Audigy
    - Integrated 2.0M Pixel Webcam
    - Dell Wirless 355 Bluetooth
    - Basic Black Matte LCD back color

I or, I should say, my company is paying $3,000 for it.
I have bought all my last 4 notebooks from Dell and never had a problem.
That is why I'm going to wait.

I got an ESD of 7/26/2007
    I ordered it on 7/13/2007

Still nothing. I spoke to a customer care rep today and she said that it has to do with the color covers or bases I don't what you call them.

She said that Red and Black were the fastest to ship. But Black was best overall. Also, she said that they are not making white ones at all.

I was hoping to play with it on vacation but oh well. :(

^^^ Very good article. Repped. Actually I feel a little better in terms of the deal I got, by buying now. Unfortunately, we may have to wait until the holidays to get our systems, lol.

Agreed! I am happy with the deal I got. I recently bought a XPS 410 and have been very pleased with it. I think it will be worth the wait. Thanks for the rep!

The deal that I got for my laptop is probably the best price I could find and I could trust. I pretty much have the same specs as a Asus G1-s had in best buy and that played awesome, but it was like 1,800 bucks.

Just the wait I really hate

Just called the dutch Dell customer support, there was a mistake in the status. it was not in preproduction but in production since July 5. Cust. serv. rep will update me every 2 days by email as they only change the update site once a week. Thats why it can happen that people receive their orders before the estimated date.
She also told me that currently the big issue is the glass of the lcd screens and the colors.
They do not compensate as it is a worldwide DELL problem. Strange that in US people get compensation but Dell Netherlands is "going dutch" ;-)
