I know alot of 1520/21 and 1420/21 have been going out but really kind of curious if anyone has received a 1720/21 or knows anyone that has received, or at least had theirs go past build??

the american dell reps i spoke with told me the 17 will have delays either with vostro or insipron so i stuck with the 15.4 instead they said those will be going out much faster now.. its supposed to be a lcd issue from what 3 different reps told me.. they all gave the same reason..

I ordered a 1721 on 8/7, was told my ESD was 8/23. My pc was built the next day and since 8/8, has been in "boxing stage". I am told by CSRs that sometimes it takes 15 days to "box" a package - WHAT!!!!!! So who knows what's really going on!

FYI - I got the black lid.

I ordered a Jet Black 1721 on 8/6, with an ESD of 8/20. I'll post an update when there's one to post. :)

I hope mine goes out soon. I haven't heard of many delays with the 1720/1721's, and since I went with Jet Black, that probably helps my standings a little. I didn't get a lot of upgrade options (see sig), I was pretty happy with it the way it was, just the DVD burner and the 85whr battery.

I ordered a 1705 on 6/25, original ESD 7/10, backordered to 7/17, then got a notice of a backorder of 7/25. In the mean time, I started getting inundated with advertisements for the 1720, and assumed that essentially the priority for Dell was to build for that advertising campaign, and pluss I liked some of the features on that better.

I cancelled the 1705, ordered the 1720 (Alpine White) on 7/18. ESD of 8/3, backordered to 8/10, and now currently backordered to 8/17.

However, with the latest backorder notice I received, I was given the following three options:

    1. Cancel the order.
    2. Agree to the backorder pushing the ESD to 8/17.
    3. Agreeing to all future backorders pertaining to this build.

The fact that I was given the option of choosing #3, I'm not hopeful that it will indeed ship on the 17th.

Incidently, I went in to build another just to see what the ESD would be if I were to order one right now, and it said 9/3. Also, Alpine White which is the color that I ordered looked to be the only color that didn't have a "may cause order delay" notice on it.

Dang, it sucks for all the consumers (myself included) waiting for the 1720/1721 series... It seems that the 1420/1421 and 1520/1521 consumers are getting higher priority and more attention than the 1720/1721 consumers... It really sucks.

Is your 8/7 order date a REORDER, or is this your first order? I ordered mine on 7/18, and have been in the build stage ever since. I think there's about 2 people on this forum that have actually received their 1720. (If I'm wrong about that, someone please correct me.)

I feel like my order will not be completed until all the delays are gone...it seems like other orders are undercutting people with more popular orders...at first i was waiting for the color to come back in stock, but when the color seems to have come back in stock the screens become backordered, once the screens are back in stock the graphics card is backordered and so on...I know it isn't reasonable but this is getting ridiculous, they should hold the parts for a delayed order, so when that delayed part comes in, they can finish building the whole computer. Instead of letting other orders take parts away from the delayed order, which then cause other parts of the delayed order to become delayed...Oh well I'm determined to get my computer with my specs, so I'll wait it out...

Yeah, I'm starting to think that some of the parts needed for the 1720's (graphics cards, etc) are going to the 1420s and 1520s since they seem to be the most popular. I'm getting royally pissed.

I ordered my jet black 1720 on 8/1 and it is still in the build stage. It should ship on 8/14. To date, I have not received any emails from Dell regarding delays. I will just have to wait and see what happens. Has any 1720s/1721s been shipped???

You most likely won't get an email, phone call, etc. notifying you of a delay until your current ESD has come and gone. I got my email on 8/8 stating that my order was delayed til 8/28. See my sig.

I think 2 people on this forum have actually received their 1720/1721. That's it.

Actually, I ordered my original 1720 probably on 7/22 or so, but then I cancelled it and reordered (chose Jet Black over Midnight Blue and saved using a different configuration) on 8/6. But when I ordered on 8/6 they did not have the integrated Bluetooth option so I called in on 8/7 to change my order and add the Bluetooth... My shipping date was 8/22 for the 8/6 order and now it's 8/23...

Something I heard a while back... Dell only starts to build a computer once it has all the parts in stock, they don't build it partially and then wait for the missing part, they just wait until they have every piece of hardware to build it. Not sure if it's true though...

    yea yea yea
but the problem is all the computers are built in mass production manner. so they cant just pick out one computer and lay it aside and put stuff they have in and leave it until the backordered stuff come in
    sigh.............
lets have a poll for how many 1720 people have received theirs.
i will love mine if i receive it though, so i will wait patiently

Judging by your specs, I don't see any reason why they would keeps yours in production or hold it back or anything like that... ALTHOUGH, one thing I suppose that I should mention, the Jet Black & Cabernet Belkin notebook sleeve that I ordered with the laptop has a separate order number, and was supposed to ship 08/09/07 but hasn't even been processed yet because they're waiting for the actual part itself :(

But, nonetheless, I can't wait until my 1721 shows up and I can flood the forums with pics lol

I ordered my 1720 on 26 July. When it came around to 9 August and it was still listed in the online status as ‘Work in Progress’ I contacted Dell CS through the website.

I was told that it had been delayed due to a shortage of parts. I don’t know if this transfers to non-Australian customers, but I was also told they are expecting the parts to arrive on 17 August. I don’t know what parts in particular they were referring to, but hopefully since my configuration has practically everything upgraded then there might be a little something for everyone!

Previously, I was reasonably hopeful of it coming not too long after that (the CS rep said he would give me an estimated delivery date once the parts came in). However reading some of the threads on here has made me a very sad panda. :( I’m now expecting more delays beyond that, I guess.

Hopefully I can hang in there with my old 9300 for a little while. I have to say I am more than a little not happy with me having to follow this up myself in order to find some of this out. They should have been in contact with me as soon as they were aware of the delay.

Arrgh. Now I'm even more thrilled with Dell, since I just played around on their website and configured the same system again (with an added bluetooth mouse) for about $110 less - even without the coupon I used before.

From playing on the website, also I get:
8600M GTS 256 meg - parts estimated to arrive on 17 August
Ruby red - estimated 21 August

Now why the hell didn't the customer service person tell me the second part? Are they going to wait until the 17th and then tell me that they got the video card, but the screen will cause a delay until the 21st? And then what, once the screen is available they'll be out of the graphics cards again?

Perhaps I should cancel, change to the brown colour (reporting no delays) and get it shipped once the cards arrive on the 17th...

there are a lot more people ordered before you and are still waiting
    1720 is the devil.

SSHHHHH!!!! Don't say that kind of stuff!!!!! LOL!

Seriously, I think they're only worried about the 1420s and 1520s b/c they seem to be so much more popular. The 1720s are at the bottom of the barrel I guess.

Exactly! So since Dell hasn't got the parts (and supposedly have heaps coming in when they do) and hasn't started assembling them, I don't think I'm missing out on any time by cancelling and reordering. According to the dell customer care rep:
So I've now submitted a new order. Am waiting for a rep to see the new order come in and then cancel the old one and transfer the money across/give me a refund.

Exact same specifications, with a free bluetooth mouse thrown in. But AU$282 cheaper (the coupon I used also changed from 3% to 5% in the intervening time). So now AU$3,300 is the price for a pretty damn good laptop with extra warranty. So I'm not happy with the expected 8 week wait (which is what I was told), but I doubt I could find another laptop anywhere with these specs for a price that's anywhere near close.

its not true that they wait for every single part to start building, because i talked to a csr, and she said that my red 1720 is currently being built as we speak, but they were waiting for the red lcd.

If it is a LCD issue, and they are waiting to build them all until they get more screens, then it is possible all of us will get our computers at the same time.

Like the Nintendo Wii's, whoever has one of these could probably get a couple hundred extra bucks for it on Ebay.

Imagine how even more upset people who didn't have one would be if more people recieved their Dells.

I don't know anything for sure, just a couple thoughts as I read posts.

    Congrats Mr. Anderson!

I found out my notebook is in the "boxing" stage yesterday, hopefully it really is and will be shipped way before the estimated ship date so I can have it ready to go for school!

Right on. I was only in boxing for 2 days. Looks like I'm one of the lucky ones that squeaked out of this whole debachle that Dell is in right now.

Hooray for not loading my order up with tons of options and what-not.
