    Hey everyone.

COMMONLY REPORTED PROBLEMS for the INSPIRON 1520:

GDDR2 ram instead of GDDR3 in the 8600GT
    Annoying headphone interference problem
Some people report a CPU 'whine' noise
    Grainy screen
Hard to get the travel remote
    Weight & Dimensions

ANALYSIS OF REPORTED PROBLEMS ON MY 1720:

GDDR2: Unfortunately the VRAM is gddr2. The 1520/1720 computers both run very cool; I'll be able to overclock it, even higher than the 1520 due to better heat dissipation.

Headphone Interference: Completely silent. I'm not using the provided earbuds (I didn't get any because I ordered a more expensive pair that Dell offered: Skullcandy Full Metal Jacket 9mm.)

CPU whine: My laptop is pretty much completely silent. I can't tell whether it's doing something or not without looking at the HDD light.

Grainy Screen: I got the 1920x1200 screen. It is flat out GORGEOUS. No graininess at all. Slight light leakage when viewing total black.

Travel Remote: Got it no problem. I am in Canada though so that might be why.

Weight: Yes, it's heavy. Heavier than the 1520. It weighs about as much as 2 textbooks. That's not really a problem for me. (Yes, i'll be taking it to/from class frequently - I'm in school for music production so having my own computer with a ton of screen real estate is going to be a huge benefit.)

    IN CONCLUSION:

My Inspiron 1720, if you don't mind the larger size, is less of a disappointment than some of the 1520's you guys are getting. If you are on the fence regarding which one you want then at least in my experience the 1720 is the one to go for.

    lol u're still runnin gddr2.

claiming "better heat diss'p8n" doesn't mean anything, especially when u're ABOUT TO overclock for better THEORETICAL perf. who says there is even better diss. anyway? or that it'll even be enough to make a difference? :)

you paid extra for better headphones, same as claimin u're gonna OC to get better GPU perf.--just cuz u went out of ur way to avoid these "issues" doesn't mean you do'nt have them or they can be avoided by everybody simply by choosing a 1720 over a 1520. :)

i had an HP dv6500t (HP santa rosa, almost the same as 1520), and ppl complained about the santa rosa whining noises on the HP/Compaq forums too. CPU specific problems are not 1520 specific problems. :)

one of the reasons why i chose a 1520 is because of size. i don't need a gigantorxx 17" laptop and don't want one.

Yeah, I'm still a bit disappointed with the 400mhz vram, but that seems to be 'intentional' and not a 'defect' on Dell's part. All i'm saying is that in that regard the 1720 will be *slightly* better than the 1520.

Regarding the earbuds, when I get home from work today I'm going to try cheap ones to hear what it sounds like. I'll update this thread then.

Wow, awesome usue of the English language there, I could almost understand half of it.....
I'm pretty happy to have the 1720 coming, just because it seems more problem free, as long as the 1440 isnt grainy I'll be happy.

Generally speaking, when you're going to criticize someone else's use of the English language, it's a good idea to not misspell use as "usue".

Misspelling "use" as "usue" is OBVIOUSLY a typo..Not a problem with the English language.

When you're going to criticize someone for criticizing someone about the English language, make sure you remember that a typo has nothing to do with sentence construction and proper grammar.

And when exactly did I say that a typo is a "problem with the English language", or say that I thought a typo was related to sentence construction and proper grammar?

I was merely pointing out that IF someone is going to criticize someone else for their use of the English language, it is generally a good idea to avoid typos in that criticism, as it does damage your credibility to some degree.

    -Zadillo

P.S. Btw, I probably would argue that a typo is just as much of a "problem with the English language" as poor grammar or sentence construction, or at least fairly important in its own right.

Lol, ok you're right it does :x

Still, a typo is a typo. That block of text up there that made next to no sense was much more painful than trying to figure out that "usue" was "use".

My 1720 makes that annoying high pitch noise Im hearing so much about. Does anyone know if its fixable?

I got the 1440 matte screen - it doesn't seem grainy to me at all (its miles better than my 4 year old Toshiba!).
