Does anyone use their 1705 as an NLE video editing station? I finally bought mine but I will not get my hands on it for a couple weeks when I pick it up at my cousin's house.

I chose the WUXGA size specifically to make it HD video ready: Has anyone tried editing HDV or ProHD clips on it?

Any advice, tips or anecdotes would be nice!

What are your system specs? How well you can edit video is directly related to your processor, RAM, video card, and hard drive.

    That's not particularly helpful advice.

Yes, but it's better to give it now while he is not yet too heavily invested into software and hardware upgrades. If he is serious about NLE that is.

I've used the new macs at school extensively and I just don't like them.

I had the cash to spend, but it didn't seem worth it to get something that was less powerful (for the money), had a lower-resolution LCD, and an OS that I just can't get comfortable in.

I realize that FCP is the greatest thing since canned beans, but I grew up on Premiere and have heard Avid is a good high-end alternative on the PC side.

My system comes with a 2300Ebcpu, 512mb ram, and a 100 gig 5400 HD. i plan to edit on an external 7200 RPM 3.5" drive, and upgrade the ram to 2 gigs. I'll buy a merom chip eventually, but I couldn't keep waiting on it.

    Anyway thanks for the replies.

Get an ExpressCard SATA adapter and an external SATA 7200 RPM (or faster) drive. The Duo Core processor won't need to be upgraded to the Duo 2 Core processor IMO. After adding your RAM (and reformatting to get rid of all the Dell crapola) your laptop should perform exceptionally well.
