What's your screen preference for the inspiron 1705? I tend to like things easily readable.

Id go with the Truelife - there is a lot less light leakage on it, and the screen has more clarity to it than the normal screen. If the text is to small, you can decrease the resolution, but the screen wont be as clear when its not on its native res.

Tru-life is a great screen. I will fourth the motion for it. It is alot brighter and clearer than the normal LCD. :)

With the Truelife you do get some glare, but it provides 10% better contrast ratio. The Truelife feature also helps with the light leakage. It disperses the LCD lights better. But jauburn are you considering getting a higher resolution screen? If your planning on gaming or doing any video editing / 3D work you should consider getting a higher resolution screen.

Well it really depends. Alot of games and graphics cards when gaming don't play very well on the 1900x1200 screens, just because it is alot more taxing. If you run in non-native you will see some "blurryness" but that is about it.

Personally, since I game, I got the 1440x900 screen because I like playing in native rez.

For video editing, I would get the 1900x1200 because it will fit alot more on the screen.

Yep, this is all personal preference. Even though I love the truelife screen of my 700m, my next laptop is going to be a matte screen. Starting to get tired of the glare from the glossy screen. :(

I'm a bit concerned about glare, but much more concerned about tiny text and icons from high res screens. Don't like 'em.

Truelife. The text and icons are small but readable. You can always adjust the system icons and text anyway.

It is absolutely incredible that Dell has succumbed to marketing pressure and offers only the reflective screen as their highest resolution screen. What happened to their high resolution matet screen? Anyone that has seen the new Mac Pro will understand what I am talking about. Great screen with high resolution -non-reflective!

Is there any current WSXGA Dell screen offered that comes in the matte?

I have the TrueLife Ultrasharp and it is absolutely beautiful. I had the Matte WXGA on a 9300 that I returned to get the 1705 and it was alright but didn't really make use of the 17" of screens space. I run everything at native res, Battlefield 2 is a taxing game and after I slammed 2 gigs of ram (instead of the 1 I bought with it) This laptop is able to play at high settings for everything, and I play on Native 1900x1200. When you first boot this up and see how absolutely sharp everything is you will be glad you got the truelife. I have never looked back.

But you can have high resolution and still have the matte screen! Dell use to make them. Then Sony came out with their reflective screen, and the rest is history. Dell copys Sony. Along comes Apple with their wonderful high resolution matte screen on their Pro model, and hopefully they will turn the tide! We must fight back the marketing folks and demand to have our matte screens back! Stop buying those reflective screens!

I think about 75%-80% of all notebooks sold come with reflective screens rather than regular matte screens. There are only a couple of notebook makers that use matte exclusively - IMB/Lenovo and Apple are the only ones left I believe. I used to have a 15" regular, standard aspect ratio UXGA screen on my old Toshiba Satellite and it was pretty good considering it was only a matte. I must say, however, that IMO, reflective screens offer much sharper, clearer images than matte screens do.

I ordered the matte screen. Saw the 600m with reflective screen and, although attractive initially, the reflectivity bugged me after a while. I've never looked at the matte screen on my 8600 and said, "gee, I'm going to hate this after a while."

I guess I just don't understand all the fuss.. Ok, glossy vs matte...there is something real there. I just don't get why you wouldn't get the higher res screen. I get pretty confused when people complain about small icons/text. This is very easily fixed with a few clicks of the mouse!

There is always this argument at getting the lower res to play games natively.. I have been playing games on pc's since the late 80's. I understand the argument that if you get the high res screen and dumb down the resolution it looks ****py.... But in my opinion that is a non factor with the high res screen on the 1705. The only thing I turn it down for are Oblivion and Battlefield 2. All my RTS's work fine 1920x1200, as does World of Warcraft. The stuff I do turn down still looks incredible. I run Oblivion at 1440x900 and I tell ya, I can't notice any blurring due to pixel distortion etc.. pretty much because the game has blurring and HRD and blooming...it would be pretty hard to tell the difference between 1440x900 on a 1920X1200 screen..vs native 1440x900.. Same thing with BF2 (which has no widescreen resolutions), I play it at whatever resolution works. With first person shooters, things are moving so fast anyway, graphic detail on that level is lost IMHO.

Again, this is just my opinion.. But so many people get bent out of shape with this kind of decision. As to matte vs gloss. I have used both, my new glossy 1705 still has its sex appeal for me, ask me in a few months I guess. But the contrast just looks sooooo much better...10% or not, it looks great. yeah it does reflect...but not a major issue for me thus far and I use it during the day all the time. They should at least have the option for matte, everyone is right about that....to much riding the "truelife" bandwagon I guess.

Just an opinion, take it or flame it I guess.

    Jack

Used a TrueLife screen the other night on my neighbor's Inspiron 630m. I am accustomed to a good quality matte screen, so the glare was atrocious to the point at which it was very painful to read text unless the brightness was turned to max (at which point it only rated at "highly annoying"). And it wasn't even brighter than a decent matte screen. Obviously manufacturers like the high gloss screens because it allows them to use cheaper backlights/screens while still achieving acceptable brightness. Avoid at all costs if you can (though that only seems to be possible with Apple and Lenovo these days...well, you get what you pay for).

Well guys I have to eat crow! I took the leap of faith and gut the true life on my e1505. I love it! After I complained so much about it on this thread! My photoshop has never looked so good. Movies have never looked so good. Granted right now sitting out here on my deck in Texas overlooking my beautiful yard during a Spring 70 degree day, I do see reflections. But as the sun sits in the horizon, the quality of the screen comes out again and again. Most of the time, I use it with my overhead kitchen lights and there is no glare at all. Just pristine color.

Yes, I admit when I am wrong. And I put my money where my mouth is and try things out! All of you matte folks should too.
