I bought my Vostro 1700 in August with the matte 1440x900 screen and it arrived with the AUO3587 screen. Said screen developed some dead pixels in January and I had it replaced with another, refurbished, AUO3587 screen. A couple of days ago I developed some dead pixels on the replacement so put in a request for another screen. I thought while I was at it I'd see about the possibility of getting another manufacturer as I wasn't that confident of AUO build quality after two developing dead pixels (the screen itself was fine and I have no problems with the visual quality of the AUO).

My Tech Support rep rang me today and said they'd discontuned the AUO anyway and they'd be sending a Samsung 1440x900 Matte display instead.

So any 17" owners have the 1400x900 Matte Samsung (SEC) screen? What do you think of it? Obviously the 15.4" 1680 True Life Samsungs are getting a battering at the mo but anyone have a matte 17" 1440x900 with any grain or other issues (from what I understand the grain issue is more about TrueLife coatings and specifically 1680 15.4" screens and doesn't affect the matte screens as much).

So if you have the matte, 1440x900 Samsung in ya 17" I'd like to know what you think of it.

    Cheers guys ;)

From what I can gather the Samsung matte 1440x900 WXGA+ is the SEC3258 (?) (unless they have an updated model). Seen a couple of good reports.

Any SEC3258 users wanna chime in?

Well - just had the SEC3258 and it's really nice. Blacks are blacker and whites are whiter. Text and lines are sharper too. No grain or major backlight bleed.

So thumbs up for the SEC3258 - not all Samsungs are rubbish ;)

    Hi,
I just took delivery of a 1720 with the AUO3587 screen. I don't find it that great. Don't think it has a grain effect but does seem to shimmer.

If its discontinued now do you think i should bother tech support in the hope of a replacement samsung if they are significantly better? Did you have to send your laptop to dell? I use it for work and can't do without it :(

    Cheers

Nope - It's Small Business so the warranty is Next Business Day On-site, they come to me.
If you got the Inspiron via Small Business you should have the same warranty. Give them a ring and see what they say - are you still within your 21 day period?
