I also did my twisting and poking and found the same results. As fully expected, the Sony and Apple notebooks showed the smallest amount of flex in both aspects of the display assembly. The worst offenders were the Acer models, where the flex was considerably more noticeable than the others.

Yes I checked out all aspects of the flex, and it is exactly like Street Magus' video I posted a link to earlier in this thread. Not unexpected at all.
My Inspiron is almost exactly the same. The flex only tends to be in the centre though mostly. -
Got THE CALL yesterday afternoon, my 1555 is schedule to be delivered tomorrow(19/8) AM, 3 days earlier than the est date, whoopy!!
I'm all set to install Windows 7 RC on it when it arrives. But following one of Fragilexx's threads - Windows 7 Quickset, I realise that Dell is currently rolling out new drivers for Windows 7 on different models. Whilst there are none listed on their website for the Studio range yet, for example, the Quickset driver for the 1545 has been reported to be compatible with the Studio 14z and 15s.
My question is, I was told that most of the Vista drivers are compatible with Windows 7. Was Quickset not one of them? If not, what others are there? I really want to go straight to Windows 7(currently using Xp on my desktop) but I find this driver compatibility issue somewhat off-putting and am considering staying with Vista until everything's ready.
A totally different subject... regarding the battery on my laptop. I understand that the Li-ion batteries don't like to be fully discharged before recharging and bear no memory. More likely than not, where I'll be using my laptop, there will be a/c available for me to use. My question is, with the Li-ion battery properties in mind, shall I just plug it in to a/c everytime I use(for long period) and leave it plugged in the whole time anyway? Will it hurt the battery(longevity-wise) if I leave it plugged in even though it's fully charged? Otherwise, it's kind of a hassle to watch out for the 100%, unplug it, then say, after 2-3 hours, plug it back in. If it would lengthen the battery life, I don't mind taking the a/c adapter out everytime. Or will all this be irrelevant anyway coz the temp factor is way bigger than this charging/recharging condition/cycles... -
The only drivers that I know Windows 7 doesn't like is the audio drivers; but the default Windows 7 ones work fine.
Quickset is not a driver, it's an application, and as such there are some that will not work unless run in compatibility mode. The vista version works with Windows 7, but the on screen display for the volume control does not show up - it still turns up or down the volume, just the display doesn't show. The Windows 7 version of quickset does not have this problem.
For battery information, have a visit of this thread: NBR Battery Guide

Thank you...
It sounds like Windows 7 itself is pretty 'smart' in looking for drivers, I wonder how Microsoft implement this idea? Surely the o/s doesn't know how to go to different website to download them accordingly? -

Hi, in the same boat as funkystevie waiting on my Studio 1555. I've been reading quite a few of the threads and although some of it is things I know, its nice to see lots of different items throughly covered. Useful information all over the place. Didn't see the need to start a new thread on the subject.
Out of curiousity when did you place your order? It sounds like you may get your before me.
I ordered mine on the 10th, recieved a phone call on monday evening (which I missed) I got two identical voice mails from an automated service from dell saying I should take note of the delivery date which followed by 'please press 1 on your keypad' or something similar, followed by the call ending.
No actual date in the message. Haven't had a call back yet.
Wondered if since you just had your phone call you could remember what actually transpired?
My tracking number doesn't work currently, it was in delivery stage on friday and the Order number didn't match the customer number (this is for walsh western). I was hoping the laptop would arrive without me needing to track it. But I'm now concerned after hearing yours is being turned round quicker.
Thanks -
Well since you missed your calls, I'd suggest that you contact Walsh Western or the Dell rep who you ordered from to arrange a delivery date. If one has already been arrange, on the track & trace page through Dell website, the status should say 'IVR-OUTBOUND (SCHEDULED DELIVERY DATE)'. -
Setting my 1555 at the moment, so far so good...
One thing though, my battery came 75% full so I've plugged it in through the a/c socket. Strangely, my power adaptor periodically makes a 'buzzing' sound. It happens every 20sec to 1mins, each 'buzz' lasts no more than a sec. The buzzing noise sounds just like a fly or a bee trying to fly through glass window. Does anyone else get the same thing or is mine faulty?
I'm a bit worried that it might blow up!!
BTW, how do I check the 'make' of my 1080p screen? I looks absolutely gorgeous... -
And could someone help me checking whether my HD4570 has 256MB or 512MB please? Just going through to make sure they have fulfilled my order specifications. Once all check, I'll put Windows 7 RC on...fingers-crossed...my 1st time installing software on a pc.
Thank you. -
Google for SIW - software Information for Windows. It has a wealth of information from your computer. Under the graphics menu you can see the amount of memory that is attached to your GPU.
Check the make of your display by going to control panel, device manager, Monitors, Properties, Details, then change the drop down box to HardwareID. -
Thank you Fragilexx, I'll give the SIW a go this afternoon.
Anyone on the power adaptor 'BUZZ'? -
It shouldn't buzz, not so loud that you can hear it like that. I'd speak to Dell, could be nothing.
I assume you've tried it in another power socket in case it's not the power brick itself? Never heard of an outlet buzzing, but you never know; and I bet it's on the script for Dell to ask anyway ;o) -
I think I'll leave the buzzing for the time being, perhaps it's just the fact that the adaptor's new and will settle down after a couple of days use.
I've installed Windows 7 RC on my 1555 now. So far so good, I'll tackle the graphics card driver this evening but in the mean time, could you help me with a couple of things pls?
1) I've installed the synaptics pad drive, but where can I access the software which allows me to calibrate the scrolling and sensitivity etc?
2) My OS now is one big drive... where/when did you say that I could create some partitions? Is it too late to do it now? I think you mentioned this is one of the things I could do when I install W7RC, have I missed it?
Thank you. -
2) I believe you had to do this when you installed Windows 7.
Hope that noise works itself out. -

Emmm... looks like I need to start from the beginning again.
Before I do so, I follow your instruction to the mouse section and got a very standard looking window with multiple tabs. I must be doing something wrong coz I had quick play with the mouse options in the pre-installed Vista and a completely different application was there with various options etc, probably a program written by Dell for the SynapticPad? -
BTW, my scrollings are working so I must have installed something for them to work?
-
Sorry all, got the Synaptic pad options I was looking for now. Thank you for your input.
Will start from the beginning again now... It's time consuming but I'm loving every minute of it! -

Partitioning your hard drive so your files are separate from your OS is not required but it is the smart thing to do.

funkystevie- congrats on getting ur laptop faster than u expected...anyway as regard to the buzzing sound from the adapter...I have a similar case where the adaptor buzzes continuously...not audible until u go close to the adaptor...I got the dell engineer here and got the adapter replaces as well..but the sound is still there...the engineer told me its the 'adapter sound'...hardly matters if it doesnt affect the charging of ur battery or anything...

My Studio 1555 should be arriving some time today. I would like to clean install Win7 on it and get rid of all the bloatware. I am not concerned with losing the recovery partition. What about the items on the diagnostic partition? Are these items on a disc or are they downloadable somewhere just in case I might need them in the future?
-
Hope this helps. -
Okay. It was last Thu when I spoke to Dell about my ac power adapter overheating. Today is Wed but still nothing! I'm supposed to have a new one arriving within 5 - 7 working days(since last Thu, after speaking to tech supp) and one sent out last Thu(re-conditioned?) from Limerick?(after speaking to cust serv)
So I decided to call Dell again, apparently, to cut the long story short, the managers of the two dept 'spoke' to each other. This is only one coming! and the EDD is going to be the 7th Sept?! I was furious! Why having I been told any of this? Surely there is no way to treat a NEW customer!!
After spending a consider amount of time on the phone, fortunately for me, the rep dealing with this was rather helpful. He'd agreed to arrange for a re-conditioned one to be sent to me for tomorrow.
WE WILL SEE!
1555 order placed - what do I do next?
