When are the dell xps range going to be fitted out with the ddr3 ram?

I wont to get an ultimate notebook so i dont have to upgrade for a while, ill get ddr3, and when the ssd come down in price, ill get one of those to as an upgrade with 200gbs worth. I will have speedy memory and harddrive, great but when?

Just think how much the memory sticks used to be, now there dirt cheap so i think it wont be long until the ssd comes down in price!! :D

There is currently no mobile chipset that supports DDR3

I’ve heard that there will be a new chipset coming out, which does support it!! Near the end of the year or something? it’s also a lot smaller chipset so maybe you might be able to fit a bigger graphics card in to the machine!

How much gain would you get over ddr2 vs ddr3?

Very little, knowing that even in desktop world you have to spend a lot of money before actually exceeding Ddr2 by 5% at best. Since notebooks takes much higher timings I doubt there could any dif in perfomance

Yes, there is a new chipset coming called "Montevina". It will support DDR3 and higher FSB. It is hard to say what gain, if any, DDR3 has over DDR2: the experience of DDR3 on desktop platforms has shown no performance advantage unless the memory is heavily overclocked. That is due to the fact that latencies of DD3 are much higher than DDR2

May 2008 Montevina is supost to be coming out, but i dont see dell on the list so i guess not for the 1530 :(

Laptop makers Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Panasonic, and Toshiba are all signed up for Intel's upcoming 25-watt Montevina mobile platform.

DDR3 is mostly just more power efficient. Giving you the same, and maybe a bit more performance than DDR2, while offering longer battery life.

yup DDR3 is overpriced and in a laptop platform, will offer next to nothing in performance, and maybe a bit longer battery life. Once it becomes mainstream in the Desktop market and there are performance advantages, then you will see it come to a mobile platform.

DDR3 is still very expensive for notebooks compared to DDR2. Much like SSD to HDD...

Montevina's release is still far away. All computer companies will be using Montevina eventually, they just don't want to say yet.

no point for ddr3 then, although people make a big fuss about it being in the GT graphics card, maybe ddr3 is the only good thing its got going for it!

and montevina is only reli good in a compact notebook, and is no point thinking about as it is soo far away for dell! ow good

Graphics card memory is different than system memory. its DDR in systems, and GDDR in graphics cards. They are 2 totally different things.

Well, almost :) Graphics cards use either DDR2 or GDDR3, while system memory is either DDR2 or DDR3.
