just as the topic says, when I close my laptop or hit the sleep button the laptop will go into sleep but will not wake up. i usually have to do a hard reboot ala holding the power button down. it only happens every once in a while (most usually when i close my laptop and try to open it soon afterwards).

i've searched the forum extensively and seen similar questions asked, but never answered. thanks for any help

i used to have this problem which is the same as yours..
basically when i put it to sleep and then when i flip the screen up again to resume it hangs on some sort of command line...
i only noticed the problem occuring after i installed a beta version of the nvidia drivers 171.16 and the problem has gone away after I installed the previous version (169.09)...

Does this sound familiar to you?

Is this Vista? If so, I think there is some kind of fix for this in SP1.

This same thing happened to be twice in the last two weeks. Im betting that its problem specific to all laptop users running vista. Just spoke for a dell support techie about this issue.
He said 'the blank screen freeze stems from unability to successfully load video drivers while coming back from hibernation' While he offered me no advice on how to fix this currently, he did say that it'll be fixed when SP1 comes out in march! Freakin great..quite a while to wait on..gonna stop hibernating and hope to god that SP1 gets an early release.

This happens to me on XP. Again today on the subway my 1530 turned on while inside my laptop bag. I've gotten to the the point where I have to pull my battery pack when packing my laptop to keep it from turning on. Very frustrating.

    Hi All,

I just had the same issue on my XPS 1530, I installed the Vostro 1500 nVidia drivers and it now works like a charm, except from the fact that the network now doesn't wake up, but will try the Vostro drivers tonight.

    Cheers

Update: The Vostro drivers didn't help matters. When I wake from sleep the wireless NIC in the network properties shows disconnected, however when I repair the connection it just hangs there and doesn't do anything. Again, rebooting is the only solution.

Anyone any ideas or seen this before?

    Cheers

    Ally

I had this problem and found that the power settings were the cause. Try setting some things to "never".
