    Just received my Blue 1530.

    No visable scratches and dents.

Not familiar with Vista. Where can I find the display information, as far as model and brand numbers go.

Lastly, I am getting this constant scratch like sound coming from the left side of the notebook. Not tech savvy enough to know where exactly its coming from. The sound isnt extremely loud more like a light hiss, but does get irritating (like water dripping from a faucet). The sound comes on at start-up and continues during idle or surfing the net. Is this common with the 1530 or is it some kind of defect. Other than that, there is no other unusual sounds.

Is re-boot and bloatware really necessary for the newer Dell's. I did not get the trial virus protection.

That could be a sound coming from your hard disk...

For system information, you can go Control Panel > System, or Winkey+Pause as a shortcut.

You can generally hear the HD. Especially at startup and during the first couple of minutes at boot where vista superfetch is loading allot into the cache. Anything you do, like going on the web will also access the HD and you will hear it. Depending on who the manufacturer of your HD depends on how loud it is. Some are louder then others. Also the HD is usually under the left palm area so its closer to the user.

Vista's has a new feature in indexing where that can tend to make the HD work harder.. especially when a laptop is new it tends to do more and then quiet down after some times days weeks etc.... The whole process of Vista's indexing and superfetch has its advantages. But many call this vista's disc thrashing and its new from XP. I personally turned off windows indexing but left superfetch. Mainly because without it, its makes the OS run considerable slower then XP. But from a full boot, superfetch thrashes away for several minutes which is annoying. MS unfortunately has made vista too bloated IMO. If you only have one gig of ram you better buy more. Vista is going to run like a dog on one gig and the HD is going to thrash constantly.

Also, if the HD makes obvious clinking, or loud mechanical noises etc.. it could be a sign of a failing HD. If you go into your device manager you can see which manufacturer of HD you have and that can help in how loud it may be. But no matter which make, your going to hear it.
