    Hi all !
My XPS 1530 just arrived an hour ago.
I was in a class when my parents told me that it had arrived. I just wanted to make a mad dash for home ! :p

Okay now the business end of things...I had ordered it with Vista 32 bit home premium but I also want to install windows XP because I want to...lets just say I need XP Sp2.
How do I go about dual booting my laptop with XP and Vista ?
Also I might later install openSUSE 10.3 64 bit .
How do I do that ?

Thanks fo the help in choosing me this beast of a machine ! :D
    All hail NBR !

    Cheers !

    -Akshay

Sorry, I don't know how to setup dual boot. I just wiped my disk and installed XP. I know if you wipe and install XP, and then install Vista, Vista will give you the option to dual boot and set it up for you. I did this on my home computer.

    Things to check:
How do you like the screen and what resolution is it? What model and part number is the screen?
If you configure the notebook to "Do Nothing" when you close the screen, does the mouse pad operate correctly when you reopen the notebook after closing it while it's on?
How do headphones sound? Do you still here sounds through them if you mute the notebook?
If you use it while it's plugged in, does it shock you?

Screen is okay I guess. I also own an IBM R51...I was a big fan of matte...not so much of glossy...but yeah whatever.
    resolution is 1280X800.
Could be a bit brighter I guess, but then again I was used to matte screens.
Yes the mouse pad works correctly.
Actually I have read people complaining about whine through the ear phones provided by DELL.
I also have the same problem but its only barely audible when nothing else is playing. When some audio is playing I hear no whine. Actually its not even a whine. its more of a buzzing sound, faint at best.
But then I tried another set of earphones( the ones that don't go inside your ear canal) and didn't notice the whine.
    No. No electric shocks.

    I didn't get the LG.
Mine is 1280X800. I don't know what the make is though. Can someone help me ?
But don't be disheartened as I live in India and in my country Dell hasn't begun to ship 1440X900 screens

*looks at your sig* Damn you really pimped out your lappie ! :D

Hope you get the LG !

    Cheers

Keep things simple, install VMWARE Workstation and u can install multiple OS easily! I'm running Vista Ultimate, and running XP Pro, Ubuntu, RHAT Linux on VMWARE. To me it is a NO BRAINER if u are going to work w/ multiple OS!

VMWARE is an amazing piece of Software! It's like GOOGLE, it is your friend.

as per quote given to me, i should be expecting it on 01/29. hoping i get it sooner (is that asking too much?). the machine's being shipped from malaysia, and i'm in singapore, so i hope it'll be fast.

good luck to us regarding the screen. :) hope dell stops using those samsung panels and use the LG. it also gives them problems in the long run, and i heard samsung panels even cost more than LG.

hi. the panel list is in this thread.
    http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/579009962631/m/891000157831

For your resolution, the known panels are the ff:

    WXGA 1280x800 Panels
    AU Optronics (Model Unknown) - Dell P/N: UX303 - Size: 14.1" - Experience: Unknown
    LG Philips LPL0000 - Dell P/N: WR362 - Size: 14.1" - Experience: Not Grainy

    How to get Model information:
Go to device manager > Monitors > Generic PnP Monitor > Details > Hardware Id (Second from the drop down box)

i was supposed to wait until March to get my lappie, but i chanced upon a really really good deal at the Dell Singapore website. I took it while it was there (which was only around a few hours or so). Turns out it was a pricing glitch. :D So far, I think my order's pushing through.

    Congratulations again! :)

When I look at my hardware Id's it just shows something like, "Generic Monitor" or something like that. Am I doing something wrong?
