For starters, I am completely computer illiterate, so my apologies for my stupidity.
My Inspiron 1525 has, in the last few days, started to make a very high pitched whining noise; it is constant, though becomes louder the more the computer works. At first I suspected the fan, and that still could possibly be the case, but I'm almost certain it's the hard drive yelling at me.
    It hates me, apparently.
Anyway, that being said, what should I do? Open the laptop and try dusting it out? I've had it for over two years, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a mountain of dirt in there.
I'd just take it to our local computer shop, plop it down on the counter and beg for help, but my fiance and I are completely broke at the moment. I just don't want the computer to crash before I get a chance to take it in.
    Suggestions, pretty pretty please?

Try using i8kfangui to run the fan up and down. If stopping the fan doesn't do away with the noise, then you know it's coming from your HDD.
