Here's my situation, my dad needs a new laptop, we'd both like a blu ray player for our 1080 plasma, and we have a 200 dell gift card.
I want him to use the card for a ps3 or something that is a machine that is meant to be playing bd's all day and a separate laptop. He would rather kill two birds with one stone by gettin a 1525 with a blu ray player.
    What do you folks recommend?
Does anyone know the quality of the Blu Ray player on the 1525? will it last? Is it 1080? is it HDMI 1.3?
    Thanks in advance!

Nay. PS3 ftw. The Blu Ray player is.. well, as you'd expect, a blu ray player.

But seriously the PS3 offers so much more aside from being just a Blu Ray player. It also offers media streaming, its own storage capacity, gaming capabilities, and even a built in internet browser. PS3 would be worth it over laptop.

Ditto as to what Forte said.

Same price, but with the PS3 you get more.

Does the 1525 even have HDMI output on it?

Its not hard. Same price, but you get more with a PS3. You don't have to lug your laptop to the TV, you can use the PS3 was a media center, etc.

OH YES. I completely forgot to mention this in my initial post.

The PS3 is firmware upgradable and Sony has confirmed that they will continue to provide firmware updates to the hardware if any new features come out for it like BD Profile, organic dye reading capabilities, etc.

Standalone players on the other hand are not firmware upgradable to support any new features added to blu ray and the drivers that Dell provides for the blu ray player that comes with the M1530 will most likely not be updated to be able to match any new features that come out for it.

Don't forget, aside from gaming there is a web browser, media center, which is one of the most major reasons why PS3 is kick arse. You have video files on multiple laptops or computers? Stream them all to your TV using your PS3 as the hub wirelessly or no wireless. Its really killer.

The firmware upgrades I referred to are to new BD Profiles aka. refers directly to video playback for movies and such. So... just dont bring up the gaming part.

The PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player right now. The final Blu-Ray spec isn't even out yet and the PS3 is the only which can be upgraded. You can get the PS3 for less than the $450 Dell is going to charge you to upgrade to a Blu-Ray drive. Wal-Mark is giving away a $100 gift card on all Blu-Ray players next week which I believe includes the PS3.

If you're looking for a cheap Blu-Ray player Lenovo is offering a pretty good deal on the R61. The Blu-Ray burner is a $100 upgrade over the DVD burner. If you want to go really cheap and get it with Linux, it can be had for around $700. The R61 doesn't have HDMI, but you can get the dock with has a DVI connector.

In simple terms, you want the PS3.
