so i order a 1520 with the 7200rpm hd...i received one but the lcd light was dead. i used it for a week or so plugged into a monitor and it ran fine and was extremely quite.

now they finally sent me the replacement and this thing never shuts up. the 2nd light from the top on the right side thing is always flickering, and the noise from the hd is non stop. and to top it off the cd drive makes a ton of noise when i have a cd in there. plastic vibrating against plastic.

anyone else had this problem with the noisy HD??

No, but I did notice the LED flickering a lot. I figured it was Vista or something Dell installed doing background maintenance. I had a 7200rpm hard drive, but it wasn't noisy. The DVD drive wasn't noisy either. The loudest thing about it was the fan that would go into high speed periodically, but even that wasn't any louder than you'd expect it to be.

mine kept on going for quite awhile. it took a couple days after reinstalling vista for it to calm down. now it isn't on all the time. mine is pretty noisy, easily audible in a quiet room. but i never use it in a quiet room and i have it set for performance, which makes it louder- so it's fine with me.

i also use a 2 gb SD card for readyboost, that seems to help a bit.

the cd drive sounds like it's surely bad...

    sorry about your troubles!

turn off search indexing for your drive, system restore(i don't recommend this because u can't revert back if there is a problem but it will stop stop taxing the HD). c if that helps

tried the search indexing and got this:

    error occurred...
    c:/boot/memtest.exe
    access is denied

did this for several files, just clicked ignore all. is that normal?

I already wrote a thread about this annoyance of Seagate HDDs.
And a couple of users reported success when using my solution.

    Check out my Solution

PS: This only helps to get rid of the clicking that is used by the HDD head-parking technology. I would definitely check the drive with either some manufacturer utility or other hdd health checking software.

Some more info you can find here
