The chirping isn't your CPU, and no, the only thing you should really hear is the fan and maybe your hard drive clicking when you load stuff.

    Maybe there's a sparrow in there.. :p

Seriously, though, the only sounds should be, as JGG mentioned, your fan or HDD.. Or your Optical drive, if in use. Perhaps there's somehing stuck in the fan, or it's faulty.. Call up Dell, if you can't figure out what it is....

I think i'm just going to have to get used to it, because the thoughts of waiting even more time for my laptop to arrive quite frankly turns my stomach. It is not too bad, sort of like feedback from inside the computer.

However, I did check inside the computer and did not find a sparrow.

    Thanks guys for your input

Your not alone, I'm using mine right now and it was just making that chirping noise you were talking about, it was the optical drive though.

mine makes chirping noises...it's more like a high pitch buzz...but not too loud. Does that sound like it?

I'm not hearing it through the speakers or anything so its ok and I'll live with it.
I'm pretty sure its the hard drive, or that Core2 Duo problem people were mentioning.

A high pitched buzz? Is it by any chance coming under load, or something? The XPS M1210 has a documented CPU whine issue. If it isn't he OD in the OP's case, then you can try blowing the vents with compressed air.. If it's the CPU(hope it isn't), then hard luck...

Hey guys, mine is making this same noise too. It's more like a buzzing noise like a previous owner said. Should I contact dell for a replacement? Is it supposed to be sounding like this...

Mine is making noises which I would describe more as 'ticking'. I've worked out that it is coming from the second light down on the right hand side (the cylinder thing below the power light) - the one which lights up when the computer is thinking. It 'thinks' about twice a minute even when I'm not doing anything and creates this weird ticking sound (whether its the light or cpu making this noise I'm not sure). But don't get me wrong its very fast - instantaneous - so can't really think what its doing. Is this Vista indexing??! Will it stop 'thinking' ?!

if its a high pitch sound...it could be from a slighty faulty motherboard with the core 2 duos.

    Hey safarimark,
When you plug in earphones to the headphone jack, do you get any high pitched sound from it?
