There seems to be some general confusion as to why there are delays on the 1520 series Inspiron (as well as some apparent delays on 14 and 17 series). Here's the information I was given and the outcome that it led to:
I was told yesterday (7/30) by a Dell rep (online chat) that the WXGA+ (1440x900) LCD had delayed my order (note: My order was never delayed...I ordered on 7/26 with an estimated ship date of 8/10). So, I was given a free upgrade to overnight shipping.
On the forums today, I noticed some posts regarding systems speced similarly to mine, ordered on ~7/26 which had already shipped. This again led me to contact Customer Service (by phone this time) in regards to my order. I called them today (7/31) and spoke with them in regards to the orders which were placed after mine, but shipped before. I was very polite, and in turn was assigned a Case Manager. I was told that my order would be expedited, and would ship by this Friday (8/3). I was told that I would be given a call by Friday with a shipping number so that I could track my order, and that it would be here no later than Saturday (8/4).
Dell seems very willing to work with you, you just have to be patient as the Customer Service can indeed be very poor sometimes. I believe I've simply been lucky in having two people (Mussair and Geet) who have been very helpful and have provided great service to me (free shipping upgrade, expedited order).
This thread is to track what has been rumored to have delayed the Inspirons, namely:
-Midnight Blue Screen
-WXGA+ (1440x900) LCD
I've also heard that the Ruby Red Screen is delaying orders.
My suggestion is to call and "complain" (very nicely) to a Dell rep about known orders which were placed after yours and shipped before. They have been very willing to work with me, so I can only wish the best of luck to others.

What phone number is that, the same as the order status?

Buckeye,
I did what you said yesterday. I was talking with Syed and he told me that I did not have a delay. I told him that there were people who ordered after me but their laptop was shipped already. He promised me that it would ship by Wed. morning.
When I woke up today, I was at least expecting my system to be in testing if not, boxing. Nope. Still in build. So I called up again (different person) and he told me that it is being delayed due to the screen.
I hope my buddy, Syed is right. He is a very nice guy. -
The rep I have been speaking with indicated that the 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT was the reason my order has been so delayed (backorder -- if you can believe anything they say). I think it is a load of crap though. My rep promised me an updated shipping date today, if I don't get that then cancellation is going to be the route of choice for me.

I was just told by Geet that the delay was due to the processor (T7300) and the 8600M GT. He ensured me that the order was being expedited though, and told me he'd call me by Fri to let me know the order shipped.

I'm on chat now. They're saying its the LCD screen. I got anti-glare. I asked how long it was going to take and she said I should cancel my order. What is that?
-
The rep won't give me an estimate date for shipping.
-
Your system is basically identical to mine except for the color and HDD speed. I order on July 15th and mine still hasn't shipped.
I guess I should call and complain that people are getting their laptops before me when they ordered after.. Dell Chat doesn't help out in that regard. They just tell me the estimated shipping date or tell me it's going to be delayed until August 22nd. -
for the anti-glare?
-
Exit out and try to get an american rep.
-
They rep said the expect the Screens in one week.
-
-
I got anti-glare. My glasses give me enough glare already!!
I think I'm going to call the 1-800 number later. The chat was worthless.
I talked to my original case manager last week (the dell website switched my billing and shipping addresses on my order), and he said there were no delays). -
I just checked my order status online. My LoJack for laptops has now shipped. They told me that it would ship seperately when I originally placed the order but due to the fact that it did not ship out when I placed the order, do you think that this is an indicator that my laptop will ship soon? When I dial the phone number to check order status, it's still saying "build stage" just like it has since the 16th.
-
I was told it would still be the 8th before it ships and I asked if there was anyway they could compensate me after being on the phone for so long, she said she would give me a $100 coupon that could be used on a future purchase, I asked her why I couldn't just get a credit for that amount but she wouldn't allow it. I'll probably be contacting them again once it ships to try to convert that coupon into a credit, otherwise i'll just buy a messenger bag or something. -
So, I just got off the phone with a Dell rep. He said my order will ship on Monday like its supposed to. He didn't say anything about a delay in the lcd screens. I asked him about it and he said that there wasn't a backorder. Right. Get this, then he says he's going to call on Monday or Tuesday if my order hasn't shipped. I thought it said it was going to ship on Monday?
Worthless. -
Well, mine was just delayed T_T.
-
-
Has anyone had a Dell Rep call to confirm shipment?
-
Ordered 1420, pink anti-glare on July 12, with shipping on Monday July 30th. Talked to CSR few days before the 30th and he assured me no delay on anything and it would be shipped. Monday, late afternoon received an email it will be delayed until Monday Aug 6th due to shortage of LCD. I was not pleased, to say the least. I called and spoke with another CSR and I told him I figured it was going to be delayed because it was still in production stage and was just really upset that the other CSR totally mislead, no really lied to me. He of course apologized and said he would compensate me....(long silence on the phone) so i finally said ok with what. He offered a 100 coupon or a credit to my account.
-
The delay is a combination of the color and the LCD (anything else they say is bull****). Maybe waiting will lead to better 1520 builds...
-
I guess I'm still only a week out from my original estimated ship date, but the one CSR who said it was going to be pushed back to 8/22 doesn't make me feel any better about it. -
Im going to call them whenever i get off work. I have the same build you do Buckeye so maybe I can get some answers.
-
When I called up Customer Service yesterday, I complained about people who were placing their orders after me. They couldn't tell me why they were getting it early, but they gave me an extra $50 dell coupon. Now I have two of those!
Of course, I didn't ask for it. I still didn't receive any answers. -
Of course, no one on this forum has been posting their order number for me to refer to... Anyone? -
My 1520 midnight blue, ordered 7/11, is now scheduled to ship 8/28 as of this morning. My fury can not be put into words.
I'm working on this with dell, but that is just too late and I may now be forced to cancel. -
-
I went with the glossy 1280x800.
-
The delays are all in the color you choose, there aren't any delays on LCDs anymore. The lady I talked with for an hour was great (in her helpfullness).
She also said cancelling and re-ordering with black (the only color not delayed) will not speed anything up if you already have an order. -
Okay, so I just called and the csr I spoke with said that there is no delay that she can see, and volunteered that there is no delay with the color or the screen, and that there was nothing she could tell me today. ( my est ship date is tom.) Well, Then she told me to stay on the phone her manager wanted to speak with me... well when she transfered me, it hung up on me. What doI do? do I send her an email? What would her manager want to talk to me about?

Your computer is probably being seized by the FBI for investigation...j/k. They probably want to come up with some lame excuse about how disgormificators are on back order and therefore delaying your order by aprroximately 5 years.
-
Man, thats what it feels like!!!!! ;-)
-
*sigh*
I ordered mines on the 12th of July
Expected ship date... YESTERDAY JULY 31st... STILL IN BUILD STAGE? WHAT THE HELL? -
Francine -
I really hope mine doesn't get delayed (it seems like it will be). I really don't feel like getting it in mid-end of august.
-
ehh i'm starting to look at other computers. if this stupid 1520 doesn't come by the time school starts, i'm done with dell. so far i've liked the portable one cxc90. (link: http://laptopsinc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=CXC90&Category_Code=P1CX)
-
yea these delays are ridiculous. Dell defiantly underestimated the amount of orders they were going to get or from the start they didn't care. But in my opinion a monkey could run the company better then these people.
-
I just spoke with customer service.
"I have also checked the production details for the order and retrieved that there are no parts shortage for this order." -
-
My 1720 won't be shipped until 9/4... When I built it at dell kiosk last night they said it would ship on 8/20. What to do...
-
Ordered 1420 on July 10. Ship date as of the ordered being canceled today, and a new order created, August 30. I got the $100 coupon, didn't get the offer of credit. Oh, that coupon was from two delays ago...
-
-
None of the items (not even the red color) on my order are backordered (at least were not when I ordered). And still these professionals are not able to finish assembling a notebook in six days! Its a shame! Either they are lying about the shortage or some huge orders (like those from big corps) are cutting ahead of the queue or someone's not being productive at all! It could be a combination of the three!
-
-
doomed you are all doomed! loud whine noise in these laptops and you are still ordering and now the delay. doomed!!!
-
I ordered on 7/29 and it is in boxing stage according to the phone status but still in production stage according to the website.. I hope this boxing stage lasts not more than a couple of days
-
Well, just cancelled my 1520. Figured mine would probably get delayed to 8/31 also.
-
Alright, I have some important information for you to write down. If you need to hear it again, just say, "Repeat it." Your order is in production, and is currently in the build stage. And it will remain so until the end of time itself.
