I ordered the Inspiron 1520 with the 8600m GT and I had three people promise me that it will come with GDDR3. Am I going to get GDDR3 or is Dell lying?

    No, they're lying. It's DDR2, if I'm not mistaken.

It's GDDR2, always has been. At release they mistakenly advertised it as GDDR3; had to refund some people $200 for "false advertising".

These three people are wrong, you won't get GDDR3. You have to get a MacBook Pro, Sager 2090 (and variants), or ASUS G1S for the faster memory.

Only if you ordered while it was advertised as GDDR3 (the very first week or two the laptop was out). They now show it as GDDR2.

I have a 'case number' that will prove it if necessary. The big thing was that I had three people from three respective departments confirm that it was GDDR3; a Dell sales rep at a mall kiosk that actually was fairly computer literate after a conversation with him, A Dell 'manager' over the phone, and a Dell technician. If it is GDDR2, although I'll be fairly disappointed, it's still a fairly good price ($1510) for what I'm getting (7200 RPM HDD, BT, T7500), considering the alternatives like the the ASUS for $2000 and the MacBook Pro for $2500.

Plus the $200 refund. If circumstances weren't a factor, I would go with the other laptops but in about a months time, I'm going off to college and I need all the money I can get for books.

I believe the ads were corrected sometime around early to mid July.

As for GDDR3 - that's not what you should be focusing on, you should be asking about the clock speed. It's going to be pretty hard for you to prove whether it's GDDR3 or DDR2 short of opening up your laptop, removing the heatsink and checking the VRAM. They could easily say, oh yeah, it's GDDR3 clocked at 400MHz.

I think my best bet is with 3DMark06 and it's in-depth analysis of the system. Regardless of the 'GDDR3 clocked at 400 MHz', the 'stock' speed of GDDR3 is somewhere in the 600-700 MHz range and would still be Dell's fault if it comes clocked at any other speed (or something like that, you get my idea..........).

Dell corrected their GDDR2/GDDR3 typo (and their 22.4 GB/S typo) around July 15th. They wont give any concessions for people that ordered after that.

And for people that ordered before that, they dont always offer anything - their website specifically says taht Dell is not responsible for typos, and thats how they qualify this.

A few people, however, have CSR chats with CSRs promissing GDDR3. If you are one of those people who had a CSR promise you GDDR3, and you have that chat transcript, and chat reference number, then you have a case. But otherwise, no, not at this point.
