I decided to go with the anti-glare(matte) 1280x800 display, and i'm underwhelmed with it's performance using any sort of media application(games, movies, pictures). The viewing angles, contrast, and brightness aren't good at all, and now i'm starting to notice some sparkling or graininess especially when viewing whites. I figured it's because I was unlucky enough to have the cheaper samsung lcd installed with my 1520. Using it in direct sunlight, or any sort of sunlight is near impossible. I'm really starting to regret not picking the 1280x800 glossy display.

    I have three questions:

-Do you think dell would replace my screen for a new(perhaps glossy) display, or would I have to return my entire notebook.

-Do glossy displays have better visibility in direct sunlight?

-How much better is the contrast on a glossy display, and would there be any less light leakage?

    - No you'd have to send your laptop back and reorder another.

    - No they are much worse in direct light

I suggest going to a local store and viewing the screens they have. You're the first one to complain of a grainy anti-glare screen, and really complain at all about the anti-glare. Is your brightness all the way up? Did you play with the color settings in the nvidia panel?

Since I dont game and work indoors mostly, I order my 1520 with the 15.4 Wide Screen WXGA LCD for Inspiron 1520. This is supposed to the the anti-glare. I probably am greatly older than most of those that post but I am not wanting to have glare. Though I did want to have a bright enough and a quality screen. Please tell me that I may the way selection in screen choices.

I would love any opinions or views.

Welcome to dell fitted lcd screens. My vostro (wxga true life) also has a similar graininess and pictures look distorted/blurry.

The WXGA anti-glare will be perfect for you. The grainy problems people are having are with true-life screens, it has to do with the coating put on them. You can go down to your local store like bestbuy and look at the screens.

they come set below the native resolution.

Yes, I have the screen set to it's native resolution and i've messed with the display settings like crazy. It seems like nothing fixes the problem, and on top of that, the contrast is awful.

I guess it's my fault for not researching this more, but I was always under the impression that matte screens do better in outdoor enviroments. I recently saw some comparisons of matte and glossy displays in direct sunlight, and the glossy screen is far more viewable. Looks like I just wasted 1200 bucks.

Yeah. There can be reflections/glare, but if you have a dark surface behind you, the contrast is actually better in the glossy outside than the anti-glare.

I've got the 1680x1050 glossy and I'm a bit disappointed by the noticeable graininess when viewing pictures/video. Does anyone know how much a replacement, higher-quality, screen swap would be?

Hey Larson- You can find out by looking at your system config on Dell's website. Key in the service tag to get it.

btw- Mine says Samsung and I can't find any sign of graininess, pixel distortion or anything with my eyes 2 inches away or 4 ft away. Peripheral viewing angle is not what I'd consider great, but the brightness and contrast is fantastic.

Ain't that the truth! That, and the fact that any bit of sunlight will reflect off that coated screen like a freakin' signalling mirror! I have true life on my office system, and the indirect sunlight off the window makes my screen damned near impossible to see. Who's the idiot?

Geez, I thought I was the only one feeling disappointed with my 1501 screen quality, especially compared to Asus w7j or even the low-end Sony which my sister & brother use. I always think my 1501 screen does not have good contrast when watching video. The colors looks washed out, blurry, not vibrant, under-exposed, and yes GRAINY. When compared to A7J screen or Sony which I have used before, the colors look fantastic, so real, vibrant, SHARP picture without grainy artifacts, and the contrast is really so good.
I always try to convince myself that it's only my own feeling, but I still can't hide the feeling that my screen is inferior compared to A7J or Sony. Viewing angle is also very bad with my 1501. With only 45 degrees viewing from the side, every colors become very funny, blurry and blackened.

Frankly I have used several Dell notebooks and monitors (The ultrasharp), and I always feel disappointed with the screen quality. Strangely I always ended up buying Dell again and again. The text on my Dell 1709FP monitor looks very blurry. My friend bought a cheaper Acer and it is like night & day. Once I posted my complaint in Dell forum, and the moderator deleted my thread. I think this is the last time I bought Dell. I keep being disappointed with them regarding screen qualiity.

I bought an e1505 and returned it 3 days later because the screen looked pathetic next to my old inspiron 9100. I explained the issue to them and did not have to pay restocking fees, just shipping. Was thinking about a 1520, but the screens at the dell kiosk look even worse than the e1505 I had, so I thought maybe Im crazy. But no, every laptop screen in Best Buy looked better to me.

I went to Best Buy today, and I didn't notice any graininess on any of their notebooks(sony, hp, gateway, acer)

Like someone said earlier, it's like night and day, the quality of Dell's displays are terrible compared to their competitors. It's really dissapointing because everything else about my 1520 is great.

I just got my 1520 and have the WXGA+ screen. I've been messing around with it and while I can tell what people mean by graininess, its really not a big deal and the screen still looks great. I definitely would not have noticed if people didn't talk about it so much on here.

I have the 1280-800 anti-glare screen and it looks fine. No graininess and the brightness is quite good. It also does well in sunlight. Compared to my HP with glossy screen it is MUCH better... the HP only wins in colors because of it's 8bit screen, but only by a TINY nearly non-nopticable amount. The Dell screen has much better refresh with no ghosting at all though. Sol overall, I'd rate my dell screen better. My screen is listed as a Samsung.
