hi, i have a dell inspiron 1501 with 1gb ram (2x512mb), 256mb integrated graphics with shared video memory, amd 1.6 x2. for xmas i want to upgrade the ram. i was gonna get just 2x1gb sticks, but saw that 2x2gb is only $15 more. but ive seen some talk that the 1501 can only handle up to 2gb? is this true? why is this?

i assume this will work fine

    G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Laptop Memory - Retail $26

The chipset in your E1501 supports a maximum of 2 x 1Gb of memory.
If you buy a 2 x 2GB kit of memory the system will not turn on.
The Bios can only see 2GB :D

I have the same problem with my E1505

So what would I need to do in order to have 3gb of memory? Replace chipset?

No such thing is possible. You'd be looking at a new notebook if you need more than 2GB.
