hi, i have a dell inspiron 1501 with 1gb ram (2x512mb), 256mb integrated graphics with shared video memory, amd 1.6 x2. for xmas i want to upgrade the ram. i was gonna get just 2x1gb sticks, but saw that 2x2gb is only $15 more. but ive seen some talk that the 1501 can only handle up to 2gb? is this true? why is this?
i assume this will work fine
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Laptop Memory - Retail $26

Yep, 2 GB is the max RAM for the 1501.

The chipset in your E1501 supports a maximum of 2 x 1Gb of memory.
If you buy a 2 x 2GB kit of memory the system will not turn on.
The Bios can only see 2GB
I have the same problem with my E1505

So what would I need to do in order to have 3gb of memory? Replace chipset?

No such thing is possible. You'd be looking at a new notebook if you need more than 2GB.

Apparently I was not putting the memory in correctly. Now I am able to run 3gb on my e1705 laptop.
So look like the source that reports upto 4gb is probably more correct: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=105164 -

yeah, I realized that after I psoted the first post in this thread....
I was confused when I posted in here. I thought 1501 = e1705.
