Though I ordered the 1520, my experience with laptops has been that 15 inch screen is BIG!!, but 17 inch screen seems alot better ! both computers are a pain to lug around, so go with the bigger screen.

from reading people say the vostro 1500 is larger than a normal 15" usually is.. so what about the 1700?? i can get the 1700 vs the 1500 for about 150$ same config??

Well i would say go for teh 1500. Still a lot more portable than a 17" notebook but still as powerful.

also i would assume battery life to be a good amount less with the 17" correct??

The larger display consumes more power, yes.

def go with the 15, its plenty big
the 17's are just huge, and i know i wouldn't want to lug that around

i would say it depends on how much you plan to travel with the laptop and whether or not you will mind the extra size. I have the 1700 and it is a monster, but I don't travle with it on a daily basis (I only need it to move when I go on vacation) and I also don't mind the extra weight and size
