Hi, my Vostro 1500 has been shipped and is due to come this week.

I understand it comes with a Vista Business disc, is this disc bootable?

Is it a good idea to boot off it and reformat the whole disc (wiping the recovery partitiion as well) and then installing Vista?

Presuming you deselected all of the extra software when you ordered, your system will arrive with no crap on it. My V1400 had two desktop icons when I first turned it on, and almost nothing in the Start Menu.

it depends how much crap you told them to preinstall, usually it doesnt matter I specifically make sure they didnt on my last laptop. But if you didnt specify then yes it is an easier solution to just format once you get it.

Yes vista is bootable, I did a format last night. Pop the cd in, reboot and hit F12, choose CD/DVD, and press any key. It finished in about 10min, and I went to dell.com to find the latest drivers. Installed chipset, touchpad, and video drivers I got from laptopvideo2go.com.

    Oh ok thanks.

I ordered from the UK website and never saw anything about them installing extra software.
