If you check Dell's comparison chart on LCD panels it lists the top-of-the-line UltraSharp/TrueLife WSXGA+ screen as only having 200 nits brightness, whereas the lower 1440x900 is listed at 250, and the base 1280x800 at 220. Is this a typo? I thought one of the perks of UltraSharp screens was better brightness? The 17" UltraSharp is rated at 260 nits. None of the other LCD's are rated below 220.

I don't think UltraSharp implies anything about brightness. I think it's about the viewing angle. You can see they list "Wide viewing angle" for all of the UltraSharp screens.

My guess is it's not a typo and the 1440x900 screen really is brighter. I think it depends a lot on the panels offered by the display manufacturers, so one screen isn't necessarily better than another in all respects. On the Latitude D830, the WXGA screen is also listed as being brighter (more nits) than the WSXGA+ screen.
