I have a WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screen on my E1505 with a X1400. I want to see if I can set the resolution to 1440x900, which is currently not an available option. This most likely has something to do with the drivers, I have the latest supplied by dell for the X1400.

    Any Ideas?

Why would you want to do so? Its a bad idea to run windows out of native res, everything will have a fuzzy haze to it.

If the size of the text and icons is too small, they can manually be adjusted to be bigger without changing the resolution at all. As Iceman said, things will be very fuzzy, and not worth it on your eyes to run out of native.

Do you find your wsxga+ resolution too high for a 15" laptop?

my X1400 all of a sudden let me use a 2048 x 1536 res...im not sure if that is good, but just letting you know haha

is default is 1280 x 800 just so ya know

funny thing is that it lets me scroll the desktop or screen and it does not stretch the screen to fit...

because you un-selected the "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" check box... you didn't discover hot water, neither you can utilize that resolution.

If you need to know, the reason I want to lower the resolution is for when I play poker. When I read hand histories while I'm playing, I want to be able to read through these quickly as time is a factor. However, the font is not adjustable, and I have to lean over and squint to read. So, when I play poker, I've been changing the resolution to 1280x800, the next highest resolution that fits the lcd. I wanted to give 1440x900 a try to see if I liked it better than 1280x800.

And yes, sometimes 1680x1050 is too small for me. Maybe it's because I'm 6'5" and my lap is further away from my eyes. I have perfectly corrected vision though.

    Anyways, thanks for your help.

Also, I've changed dpi settings before, but this doesn't work in the poker program. Also, it tends to mess up web pages. What works best for web pages is the little zoom option in the lower right hand corner of IE7.

thanks for the info, I was seriously thinking of selling my 6400 and getting the same one with exact same config but with sxga+ screen (like the one you have) . Well I guess now I'll look for the xga+ instead.

Your best bet is to look at the different types of screens first, then decide, what works for one person doesnt always for another, I have FAR from perfect vision, and I much prefer wsxga+.

Yep. I actually went to the store hunting down a laptop with a screen size and resolution match to what I was looking for. I looked for things like the size of the fonts on the screen and stuff. I wouldn't like it if I couldn't read the information on the screen.

To answer your question, just set screen to lower Rez. As posted things will look soft and fuzzy but may work fine for you. You also have the option of plugging in a lower rez LCD screen or CRT if available. I keep an old Sony 35 pound 17" CRT monitor for the rare occasion but really a PITA ;) However I can scale from 640 up to 1280 something and all is razor sharp.

Are you (will you be) running Vista? I'm buying an Inspiron 6400 with the hi-res screen just to try the built in scaling.

If you set the DPI to 110, it should give you 1440x900 scaled in the OS instead of in hardware, which should be a better picture.
