Everytime I put my computer to either Sleep or Hibernate, my screen doesn't go back to Windows - the LCD is just black (won't turn on).
I see and hear the HDD and CDROM status spinning LED. What's going on?

OK. Here is what I have just found out!!! I have similar problem on my second replacement laptop that have similar issue. So, Dell sent me the 3rd replacment laptop cuz we can't fix this problem no matter what we tried!!!!! I got the 3rd replacement laptop for couple days now. Dell mistakenly sent me the 5400 rpm seagate HD. The problem I had on my 2nd laptop was on a 7200 rpm hitachi HD. I found it's the problem with Hitachi HD. I tried to format Hitachi drive, put in between 2nd and 3rd laptop... It seem to reproduce the same symptoms that you describe!!! So, If you have Hitachi 7200, I think it has some competibility issue with 1420.

ok I'm downloading right now. I'll see how it goes but I fail to see how a graphic driver could affect sleep mode?

I had the same problem and updating the graphics driver fixed it, and I've told other people and it has worked for them, too.

    And so you are right!

    The driver fixed the problem.

    Thank you and repped! :)

    btw,

while on the subject of Sleep/hibernation, if I'm downloading something big can I use sleep mode to conserve battery or doesn't sleep mode allow for background operating programs?

Sleep is sort of a hybrid Standby/Hibernate. It saves everything like Hibernate BUT keeps it in a low power state. No processes can be running in that time.
