Does anyone else have a 1420 with a slightly loose 6 cell battery? I know several have loose 9 cell batteries. I'm wondering if I should ask Dell for a replacement or if this is normal. I just got one 1420 in today. Samsung 1440x900 screen. Beautiful with no issues. Slight light bleed on the bottom but nothing to return if for. The loose 6 cell battery is annoying though.

    Get a grip...

If you are happy with everything else, there are lots of simple solutions to the battery issue (including common sense).

Is a potential swap worth the aggravation?

My mistake...I meant swap of the battery not the whole laptop. Only an idiot would return or swap the whole thing because of the battery. Again, I ask has anyone ELSE run into this issue with a 6 cell battery on a 1420?

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to secure the battery (a simple piece of felt will do).

Searching this website will find not only this issue, but alternatives...

Talking about making a mountain out of a mole hill...

i got a 9 cell battery that is a bit loose, but it's hardly noticeable unless you really try to shake it. not like it'll fall off though.. pretty securely tight, and when you're using you're laptop, there is no chance of it even falling off anyway.

    I agree with you...

    1) The battery has clips and isn't about to fall out
    2) It charges properly
    3) I only notice a "looseness" when I go *out* of my way to shake it

    Yikes...

My 1420 is head and shoulders above my 6000. You would think that people had better things to worry about  .

FWIW, I had a 9cell (made in Korea) from my 1420 that was loose and dell sent me a refurbished battery that was made in japan and it fit great. I sent it back because I wasn't going to accept a refurb on a two day old laptop. The new replacement was also made in Korea and is pretty loose. So it seems if you get the japan version it fits better.

AFAIK this has to do with the bottom casing on the system, and not the batteries. I have had 4 batteries, and all 4 shake in my one 1420 but not the other. Also, I have heard reports of technicians being dispatched to replace the bottom casing, and fixing this problem ;)

I heard that the some cases have problems too. I have a six cell and it fits tight, it is the nine cell made in Korea that is loose. And like I said, the 9cell that was made in japan fit perfectly.

hey. i have a loose 6 cell. i just folded a piece of paper over a couple of times and inserted it in with the battery. now it's just right. a pretty easy fix. make sure you don't force it! i had to just 'wiggle' the battery in. good luck!

    1. I shouldn't have to squeeze a piece of paper in between the battery and the system to get it to stay in right.

    2. I have two batteries, which means I don't just leave it in all the time I sometimes take them in and out...and the paper would fall out...GHETTO!

I received my new additional unit of 6 cell battery (Japan) yesterday and it is slighty fit for my 1420 and a lot better than my original 9 cell battery (Korea).

I just want to confirm...it's not where it's assembled, it's where the battery cell was made? My battery cells for both my 6-cell and my 9-cell were made in Korea, but both were assembled in China. Has anyone had any luck telling a rep the difference and getting replacements? This is crazy...

A rep told me that he would make sure I would get a japan 9cell battery but was sent one made in Korea. I think the casing was made in Malaysia

yah, it sux. we should not have loose batteries. or the grainy screens! don't go to best buy and look at the screens. you will be horrified. they are so much better than the 14/1520 screens.

    C'mon...

You can't get a bit more creative than using a piece of paper...

If it bothers you that much, simply attach a piece of felt or velcro.

Alternatively just send the thing back....

    This isn't rocket science...

    Whine, whine, whine....

The tolerances on the battery are not the greatest, but the rest of the unit is solid, much more so than my 6000.

For about the 100th time, the anti-glare screens DO NOT suffer from this problem.

I just got a replacement battery from Dell and it fits a whole lot tighter as it should. The replacement was made in Korea whereas the original was made in Japan.

For the first time, I do not want the anti-glare screen because it only comes in old-school 20th-century resolution. It's time to enter the 21st (high-def) century. I should not have to downgrade resolution to avoid a screen that looks like garbage. But I got what I paid for, I suppose. Other than the screen, my 1520 rules. Oh, and the battery. hehe... I'll bet if I ordered something else I would have a whole new set of things to ***** about! LOL!

Mine is loose too on 1420

I ordered a replacment and that's loose too.

    I had fews questions

    * original battery says 'Japan only' - what does this mean?

    * orig battery is 'made in japan; assembled in Malaysia'
new battery is 'made in Korea'
Since both are loose, which one i should keep???

The Inspiron's loose battery problem has nothing to do with what type of battery you have. It's a casing problem. That's casing, CASING! The solution? Just send the thing to Dell repair and have them put a new case bottom on it. Problem solved! I mean heck, you paid all that money for a nice, new computer. Why not get what you paid for? That's what I did, and now my computer's perfect.
