Just wondering... which one performs better?
They can be configured exactly the same... but I'm sure they use different mobo's and probably other parts are different. My guess is that the 1330 would be a better performer since it is an XPS and hence they use better parts???

Sort of. But battery life is severely lacking on a 1330 compared to the 1420.
By lacking I mean while playing a DVD it'll go a tad over 2 hours while on the 1420, it'll go for 3 and a half hours according to CNET.
If 2-3 hours of battery life is good enough for you, by all means go ahead. You can get the 9-cell if you want so yeah.
If you need that 4ish hours then the 1420 may be better. -
I wouldn't see how a 1330 would be a better performer if it is specced out exactly the same as the 1420. A T7500 on the 1330 should work perform the same as a T7500 on the 1420. It's not like they cripple components on non-XPS laptops, or they choose better quality components for XPS laptops. Bottom line: they should perform equally when specced out equally.
Also, as noted by the above poster, the Vostro [oh I'm sorry, Inspiron] has better battery life. However, the 1330 does have the advantage of being more portable. Portability VS Battery life would be the issue here when choosing between these two laptops. -
The 1330 would out perform the 1420, the kinks and build quality have been worked out. In terms of battery life the 6 cell is fine but I'd get a 9 cell with it as well.

the build quality, the cpu whine still hasnt been fixed with the m1330

I can only speak for myself, but my M1330 has no quality issues and I've even spent as much time as any sane person should trying to track down a CPU whine and mine doesn't have it. Also, in comparison to the 1420 with my 1330, exact same specs, exact same setup, the XPS outperforms the M1330 by a bit less than 5% with various benchmarks, but for some reason the 1420 shows better numbers ( but not by much ) with the testing of the GS8400 graphics card. go figure!!
1420 vs 1330
