Well I received my first 1420 a few weeks ago and had to set up an exchange because the thing kept freezing up randomly. I just received the replacement yesterday and now it is doing the same thing. I have noticed that there is a pretty good chance of it freezing if you close the lid and open it back up (It happened on both the first and second 1420). I'm going to cancel my 1420 order tomorrow because I think it's just a general problem they will all have. I don't trust the 1420's anymore so I'm going to be getting a different laptop and returning the 1420 I have.

Has anyone else been experiencing the 1420 freezing randomly? Where you have to completely shut it off and restart it before it will work?

Also, I'm trying to figure out what might be a good alternative to the 1420. I really wish it would work right because I got an extremely good deal on it. I was looking at the Sony Vaio CR and FZ (Haven't heard much about either) or maybe even a XPS 1330 but I don't know if I'm willing to spend that much.

I know I have read about this problem on this forum. I want to say a simple driver update fixed it, but I'm not positive. Hopefully someone else can help or you can keep searching the forum.

    ETA:
here's the thread I was talking about, it's about 1520s but maybe it can help?!?

It's not just when the computer sleeps... It just randomly freezes. It freezes even when i''m not using it. These are random freezes that happen at any time. It's happened multiple times on two different 1420s.

Given that you have had this same problem on two systems, and no one else has been reporting it on 1420s or 1400 thus far, its probably a good time to start looking at what other software you installed yourself or hardware devices you have attached.

Also, take a look at the two new Vista compatibility and performance patches released today.

I have not installed anything on this second computer. I made up my mind before I got the second computer that I would not install anything and see how it works, and it still froze up. The computer runs GREAT until it freezes. There is no sluggish performance at all. It's super fast when it boots up and everything. It just freezes random when it was working perfectly fine. I really find it hard to believe that no one else has had this problem. There's no one out there with this problem??? I really want to keep my 1420 because I got a great deal and runs perfectly until it freezes.

I have also been having this problem.
My 1420 freezes when I leave it alone for awhile, and also often when I plug in the AC power after having it run on battery power for awhile.

    It's not just your machine!
