i have an old toshiba satellite that after a while i just kept pluged in with the battery installed and now the battery doesnt even keep a charge and might stay on with out external power for maybe 5 mins or so.

I just received my 1420 and was wondering if i can keep external power hooked up to it with the battery installed with out harming the battery or should i take the battery out if im running it on external power?

Yes it can stay plugged in why you use the laptop with the battery in the laptop.

It can but if you really don't use your batter often it might be best to take out the batt and store it 40% charged somewhere cool and dry.

I believe laptop batts don't like being 100% charged all the time, and the heat of the laptop isn't going to help any.
