My wife just purchased a 1420 a few weeks back. I formatted and clean installed Vista to speed things up a bit. Things were working pretty well but now her machine won't come out of sleep mode and most of the time, never shuts down completely. Could this be an issue with the drives for the video card? Any suggestions on what to do? I really do not want to have to reformat and clean install again.

Could be an issue with the video card drivers.
What driver version are you using?

It is definitely a driver issue. Is it the Video Card or is it the Bluetooth or is it some other driver? This you will have to find out yourself by trial and error. If you had installed drivers from the Dell's website, you wouldn't have had any problems. Also the order in which you install the drivers is very important.

All the drivers were off the CD that came from Dell... I think I'll uninstall the video drivers and reinstall the updated ones from Dell's site. What order should I have installed the drivers?

I uninstalled the video drivers that were on the driver CD that came with he 1420. I then reinstalled with drivers from Dell's site. I am still experiencing the same problems. I feel I'm going to have to format and clean install again. Any other suggestions before I throw another afternoon down the drain? :(

All the drivers are from Dell.

I just reformated again this weekend and still encountered the same problem. When I contacted Dell support, they set me up to have another motherboard installed. When I deleted the Bluetooth drivers, now the machine start's up, sleeps, resumes from sleep, and shuts down perfectly. Anybody know what's going on here?

I had the same problem. The hard drive crashed right out of the box and I had to re-install vista complete with all the dell drivers etc. Then sleep stopped working. I too used all the drivers from the dell cd. I spent 13 hours on dell's chat support but still nothing. Since the computer was two weeks old and it was still under warentee I made them give me a new laptop. Still the new laptop does the same thing and dell's support cannot fix it. The problem seams to come when internet explorer or firefox is being used. Anyone have any ideas?
