Mine is going great. My only problem, however, are with some of the keys. When I press down on them slightly (not all the way down), they kind of squek annoyingly. Ya...

No problems at all. My notebook is the envy of all my co-works. Sure it's allittle chubby for a 14", but the 9 cell outpaces any laptop in the building. I'm the only one I know of that walks around without a charger in my bag.

Everything is good here, although I did get a replacement because of a display panel that was g****y.

Out of curiousity, how long do your batteries last (including physical config and power saving settings)?

On the "REcommended DELL" power saving setting... i started getting 4 hours on a 6 cell (doing web-browsing and word)... however.. that has definitely become less... i think i average around 2h45mins on my 6 cell.

I love my 1420 but it gets incredibly hot. I contacted dell technical support and they are sending me a replacement, brand new with exact specs. It should be here in two weeks but man, I thought I was done with this whole waiting game!

    Go green.

im actually getting a replacement too (cpu whine).... IUcandi... how did you manage to get a brand new replacement... aren't you over the 30 days Guarantee? Did you complain to Dell about it? Cuz i thought after the 30 days.. they only send out refurbished systems. How did you go about doing it? THANKS!

My 1420 stays far cooler than my cousin's Hp DV2500. Then again, she has a discrete graphics card and it get HOT while you are using it. I'm glad I have a seperate desktop and can forgo the discrete card in my laptop.

I got the 9 cell in my 1420 and it does push it to 6 lbs, making it chubby for a 14.1". But it's still far lighter than the 15.4"s.

Mine is 100% perfect other than a slight wobble where the battery is slotted in.

Had mine for like two weeks, no problems so far, perfect kinda actually. Its way cooler than all the otherlaptops I went to check out at stores, and the only thing that gets hot is the little dell logo on the bottom of the monitor, but i mean thats nothing.

I had some slight wobble in my battery and I call Dell and they sent me one that was MFG in Korea, the orig. was MFG Japan. The new one fixed the probelm. It is a 6 cell. I think it's luck of the draw though as that was a laptop I ordered for my brother. The one I ordered had a 6 cell MFG in Japan and was much tighter.

Overall, the laptop is great. The "D" key was a little tight but is better now. I do have issues with IE7 and and JAVA where IE7 shuts down every so often and restarts. Anyone else with this issue and know how to solve it?

My 1420 which is currently dual booting Vista and XP has been absolutely solid, including everything I have thrown at it (e.g. database servers, Pinnacle HDTV, Bluetooth GPS, Axim x50v connectivity etc.).

All hardware/software has worked as expected.

A great leap over my old 15.4" Dell 6400 in a much better form factor. In addition, the performance easily exceeds the speed of my Dell 8400 desktop (3.4Ghz P4).

    Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 2.0GHz, 800Mhz 4M L2 Cache
Premium Deep Navy Blue with Soft Touch LCD back color
    2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm
14.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA LCD
NVIDIA (R) GeForce TM Go 8400M GS with 128MB dedicated graphic memory
    160G 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows Vista Premium/XP Dual Boot
Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
    8X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive
    Integrated High Definition Audio 2.0
    Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini Card
Integrated 2.0 mega pixel web cam
56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Additional Battery
    2 Year Limited Warranty
    Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module

    The only minor issues:
    1. Slight nick in top
    2. Slightly loose battery (easily fixed)

Bottom line is that I would absolutely recommend the 1420 to others looking for a great bang for the buck in a solid package and great form factor (as long as you stay with the WXGA anti-glare/matte screen).

im also planning to buy one, midnight blue. do you think the nvidia geforce 8400m gs is good enough for 3d applications like maya and autocad? i know that the nvidia quadro will be the best video card for 3d applications but i dont like the model of dells with the nvidia quadro. do u think these aplications will work fine? how about the audio? is it good?

I can't speak to autocad, but Madden 2008 and Microsoft Flight Simulator X seem to run fine as well as the video rendering applications I run ;) There are also lots of opportunities to over-clock the 8400M if you are so inclined.

Regardless of the laptop you buy, a dedicated video card is a good investment (unless you are overly concerned about battery life).

As far as the audio goes, I have no complaints. No break ups and plenty loud enough for me :).

received two 1420s today.(daughters and mine) hers seems fine. mine had loud fan noise and heat blowing out of left side with initial start up. tried shutting down and restart with the same results. ran fan test (passed) contacted dell suggested i return unit since it is brand new. Is there anything I can do to correct heat and fan problem ? or should I just return it? I hate to start off with a problem.

Are those 2 1420s have same spec? If both have same spec, they should be about the same. If different processor, HD, video, and etc, the fan may run more or less depending on the spec.

the difference is the HD, 1 is 7200 the other is 5400. I`m just surprised that a fan would be blasting hot air right out of the box. I set up a return and should have the replacement unit in 2 weeks. I`ll let you know if the probvlem is solved

What can I say...... Mine is working great...... my roomate bought a HP2500Z at the same time I bought the 1420..... we used to fight a lot on whose the better one.... but now after 2 months or so.... his laptop is nowhere close to my 1420 in the performance department(his laptop actualy slowed down considerably)....hahaha.....

Mine is also outpacing my office desktop(P4 3.4GHZ)......

Actually the configurations with which I bought..... is costing $1900 while I spent $1400(way back when they launched this baby).....

The only grip I have is....... I think I would have liked the anti-glare screen over the glossy one I have right now.....

Mine had the same problem at first, but became normal after several days of use. If I were you, just keep it, and within a couple of weeks, if it doesn't fix itself, call dell back and return it.
