I received two (1 was replacement) 1420s that had the same loose battery problem. Now they are sending me another replacement.

I have a 1720. The battery is a little loose, but hardly and it isn't a problem for me. How loose is it? Mine moves <1mm laterally.

Mine is loose too on 1420

I ordered a replacment and that's loose too.

    I had fews questions

    * original battery says 'Japan only' - what does this mean?

    * orig battery is 'made in japan; assembled in Malaysia'
new battery is 'made in Korea'
Since both are loose, which one i should keep?

Most likely what you have there is a panasonic battery. It has the same problem with the Vostro 1400. Try to check with someone with the same system and see if they have a panasonic or a different battery.

Seems like a common problem. Just stick something in-between like a piece of paper or a tape. A very easy fix.

What I do is to stick a little cushion stickers that used in kitchen cabinet. It works very well. I tried electrical tape, but I think it will become sticky after a while and when it gets warm.

About the battery brand. I think there are 2 brands, one is panasonic, one is simplo. From my experience with my e1405, Simplo has better battery life. Can anyone confirm this?

Actually this loose battery problem is not much of a problem, but it is quite bothersome. Using tape or cushions will surely make the battery stable, but may probably affect performance or battery life (not confirmed). I suggest that you just live with it, and observe it before the warranty expires (batteries' warranty is only good for a year, even if you have extended the system's warranty).

Uh, newsflash, you don't have to live with the problem. That's really poor advice skree358. It's a manufacturing problem. Dell should repair it with no questions asked. And they will. All you have to do is get on the phone and make it happen.

Call them and explain the problem. They'll send you a prepaid mailer to send the computer in for repair. Dell Repair will then replace the bottom of the laptop with a new one that fits the battery correctly. End of problem. All it's going to cost you is a couple of days without your computer. I did this on my 1420 and all is fixed and like new.
