    Hello all,

I just purchased a 1420 (HIGH resolution, Glossy - WXGA+). I was wondering for those who have recently received their 1420s if DELL has fixed the Grainy issue with the screens. I'm worried about it, so if they haven't fixed it, I want to call and cancel the order and change for something else. THANKS so much for the help!

There have been a few posts saying that Dell is no longer using AUO displays. If so, this would reduce the likelihood of receiving a grainy display. However, I am skeptical of whether this is true or not. The first mention of this was from a poster who said a "rep" told him that AUO was no longer used. After that, people started repeating this and now many may think its true. I can only say this, that anything a dell rep says does not mean anything really. Reps say all kinds of things all of the time and it does not mean its true. I had a Dell rep promise me my replacement would not be an AUO.. it was and it was bad.. really bad. I am skeptical at this point whether Dell really quit using AUO but its possible.. Time will tell if less complaints come through with bad AUO displays. One thing is for sure, Dell has received tons of returns for this issue and they most likely will have to react to this at some point.

Whatever Dell does, you have no control of what panel is used on the production cell. People write, call, etc.. demanding a LG or whatever panel and its pure luck in the end. Probably the only way to get certain panels is with on site panel replacements, if you have that option.

I would wait for your system and hope for a good one. Personally, If I were ordering again for the first time, I would only keep it if they did it right the first time. If the first one was bad, I would cancel/return/refund right away. Because waiting a second time, and getting yet another dud and then having to ship back two systems is just too frustrating. So I recommend just hoping for a good one, if not, just end it with Dell and tell them why. I think Zfactor is waiting on his 4th or 5th replacement now.. yes he is getting some really good discounts, and Dell is loosing their shirts over his order, but that kind of frustration is not something most people will put up with.

desert this is not true.. my manager that works for me told me his little sister just got her 1420 2 days ago and it came with the auo screen so i doubt they have dropped auo from the mix

and i put up WITH A LOT.. and im fine with that because i recieved compensations for my time.. if i had only recieved 50$ or something id be looking elsewhere a long time ago.. dell has one more chance with me thats it.. im on #5 coming soon..

That was exactly my point. This rumour was started by one poster who said a rep said AUO was out.. That does not mean anything. Dell has suffered from glass shortages and canning AUO would only lead to longer wait times. As crazy as it may seem, Dell will still make more money by keeping AUO and just take the hit on returns. Dell will suffer longer term hits with return business. Sure they may still keep orders by shipping out replacements etc.. but those same folks may not come back to Dell a few years later when its time for a new system. I personally think its a unwise business decision for them to keep AUO under any circumstances. But corporate America only looks at short term margins and nothing else. Dell will have to pay a high price for this short term thinking.

personally i think they should ditch auo and sec.. and move to better brands like sharp, lg, imo even cpt who is a division of tatung is FAR BETTER than any auo or sec screen i have seen so far..my wife's current work notebook was a 450$ toshiba we bought at office depot.. it even at 450% comes with a sharp brand display that is beautiful!!!!!! id love to have her display on my 1520

    hey zfactor...
what kind of screen did you get?
and how does the replacement stuff work? they send you one while you still have the old one? then you have to send it back to them?

And how do you get all the compensations?? Is this merely calling their 1-800 number? And what kind of compensations did you get?

THANKS zfactor.. i hope you get a good one soon. =)

So far they have sent me one while letting me keep the old one but they tried to make me send mine in to have it repaired instead... I demanded a replacement but I don't know how many times I will be able to as I am on normal warranty and they will probably start making me send it in soon...

if you are within the first 30 days they will send you replacements.. so i figure i can get three total replacements in 30 days since replacement only take 8 days to build and send out.. after 30 days it depends on your warranty.. the whole reason i cancelled the vostro and reordered the inspiron i would have been stuck after the third replacement with only repair options..

yes you keep the one you have till you get the new one and it comes with a prepaid label to send the old one back to them..

call the 800 number to get comps and you need to be respectful but not all thank you and okay.. get mad and show you are upset and you will be letting everyone know about your dell experience etc.... make it sound as if this is a very inmportant thing to you i.e. business or school use even if you are not in school or use it for business etc... get my drift???
