1420 Is Here!! Pics Momentarily

It feels to me like there is some amount of spring tension as you open / close the lid - there's a slight but distinct resistance. I like it. I especially like the chrome bit to push it open.

 

curious about the latch too. the macbooks magnetic latch is nice. the mbp is not as nice imo

Congrats on the new systems guys. I was considering the 1405 in may which got replaced with the 1420. Now Im waiting on the xps 1330. Cant wait to unpack mine.

 

Yes acutally I received the sleeve and my LoJack software today. It's almost as if they waited until the laptop shipped to ship them because until the laptop shipped they were in pre-production and then yesterday afternoon the order turned to shipped with tracking numbers.

The sleeve was in an enormous box about the size of the laptop box. Could have been in a FedEx envelope. The zippers are rubber coated in red and say Belkin on them (via an impression in the rubber, not screen printing).

The cabernet is a rich dark red color (darker than the bright red couches that I took pictures of the laptop on on the first page). I like it a lot.

Something I didn't realize is that it's only a partial zip - it only goes down about an inch on each size and is a single piece of fabric save for the red where the zipper is attached.

It feels like a wetsuit and is thick. Looks like it will be pretty sturdy. I will take a picture of it when I get home, I didn't think to take one before I came back to work.

I wish they had their zip-up mousepads in jet/cabernet also - for some inexplicable reason they have all the other matching colors to match the sleeves except for jet/cabernet - instead they have a silver/orange thing.

 

Oh something I should add about the packing that I forgot - they stuffed a Dell catalog with a 155 off E&A coupon at the very top of box in between the flaps and I shredded the cover when I opened the box, so be careful - luckily I didn't hurt the coupon code

 

phobos, what cpu do you have in it? and what gfx card?

 

thanks for all the info. i'm thinking about replacing my current acer 5102 with this dell sometime soon. like everyone else said, it looks beautiful, a lot better than the 1405.

 

Little trick to the palm rest discoloration if you think it will happen and you're worried about it. Go to a store and buy some PDA screen protectors, cut them to size if you have to but place them on the laptop where your palms go. It acts like a clear guard between your palms and the laptop.

Actually I didn't even look, I just pulled out the power cable and left everything else in the box. I saw CDs but didn't look to see what they said on them lol.

Didn't have a chance to do that either. Maybe I *should* have taken the afternoon off...I can tell you though that for the 1420 the Dell website consistently states DDR3, and also that the review unit that Notebook Review had showed very VERY similar performance to what Notebookcheck.com listed as the performance with DDR3 memory.

 

Great pics! If it's not too much, I was wondering if you could measure the size of your 1420 as accurate dimensions are hard to come by.

Completely different lids for the laptop with the camera and the laptop without the camera. I originally thought Dell would just have one lid and fill in the camera space with a silver square filler thingy.

 

The 8400gs is the desktop video card, the 8400m gs should have ddr3.

even if you did have one, and you did change it to 1280x800, it would be blurry, but itd give you a great idea how much you can fit.

I think he mean't Dell's video cards aren't GDDR3 because of the underclocked cards.

 

Wikipedia states that the 8600m can have either gddr2 or gddr3 but for the 8400m the only option listed is gddr3.

 

I think notebook manufactures can use DDR2 instead of DDR3 still, to cut cost and be cheap..

is the OS restore/re-install cd/DVD included in the package? Some people claimed that it won't be. I wonder how people will re-install the OS if there is a need.

 

yes all dells come with them now. if by chance you dont get it, call dell, and theyll ship it free to you.

 

To answer some unanswered questions;

1420 comes with a windows installation DVD
RivaTuner v2.02 indicates that Nvidia 8400M GS is GDDR3...

phobos have you done any 3dmark06 tests? the min is supposed to be around 1200, average 1450, max 1600. maybe that will confirm if its factory settings or if its downclocked?

 

Yes, they have a micro-satin finish which is slightly rubbery feeling and is supposed to prevent fingerprints(at least reduce visibility)

 

I haven't run any benchmarks, been busy setting everything up the way I want it. Got most of my software on, all my Sidebar gadgets, got my wallpaper setup, etc...I'm downloading iTunes right now and now I'm going to go look for some benching tools...

 

I'm doing something slightly foolish but nevertheless entertaining - I'm transferring all my iTunes music to my laptop over the wireless. 22GB. By my calculation it should take just short of 3 hours. lol.

Actually it is in part to help the consumer, by having it at 800mhz(400x2) the heat and noise(?) is not a problem. I have read that the g1s has some problems with that with its 1400(700x2). While the 1520 and i believe the sager 2090 both have the under clocked version and have no heat or sound issues relating to the card.

 

hey i was thinking about the 1420 and was wondering if you think the 2.2 is that big of a difference from the 2.0 ghz processor? i might use it for some video editing, streaming and watching videos. no games or anything to excessive. but to save $100 just wonderin? thanx

I just tried out sticking a full-size Memory Stick Pro from my camera into the computer...(it goes connector side down with the cut off corner to the left if you're wondering)...Anyways it sticks out approximately 3/4" of a centimeter...If I can find my other Memory stick then I will be able to take a picture.

In the meantime, the picture shows the card I used and how much it stuck out of the slot below.

 

15 minutes to go on 3DMark...I accidentally logged off before when I was over halfway done because I was tweaking the settings and hit OK too many times lol.

 

OK so the first shot is a zoom onto the screen. In case anyone is curious this is the Chi Mei Optronics 14.1" 1280x800 Anti-glare screen. The graininess is a side-effect of my camera and shooting in a dark room.

And the 2nd shot is my 2405fpw and my laptop.
