Sorry, couldn't resist. I've only owned Dells for many years, but dear lord are most of their laptops boring as mud.

Is the bottom made out of plastic or magnesium? I find the easiest way to tell is comparing the sound when hitting it and the plastic palmrest with something metal like a ring. I like the D630 design better, but I also like the design of ThinkPads, so sleek simplicity is more of my style.

Don't know how to characterize what the bottom is made out of...It's thick and just makes a thump noise when you tap it.

The black definitely picks up fingerprints.

Battery came fully charged. This is the 9-cell.

I am turning it on now.

I will post size comparo to an e1505 shortly - bout an inch shorter in width and length but about the same thickness.

ditto i like the red chair! (to other readers, most of the generic laptop size/battery questions have been answered on the forum elsewhere LOOK for them). Now that i've gotten a decent look at the black color, Im super curious what its made of. its obviously not sheet plastic =\ ...yea i really have no idea what its made of? the only material i can think of that attract fingerprints is glossy stuff. i guess i'll have to wait to see. I wish the 1420 was just sliiiightly thinner - so fat :(

i must say, i love how the 1420 does not have those HIDEOUS media buttons on the front, instead it just has the headphone ports for easier connections, well played. i hate the media buttons of the 1520

:D received my 1420 today, been playing around with it making sure that everything is in perfect working condition, and let me tell you guys its a beauty, the screen is amazing even though I didn't go for the high resolution one, but the screen that I chose is bright, the fonts and icons are not to big at all, it pretty much fits the screen. No dead or stuck pixels, no graininess or light leakage. The keyboard is a dream to type on, I don't have to press to hard on them and it barely makes any noise. My wireless connection is superfast even on sites with alot of traffic, flash animation and graphics. The webcam is actually pretty cool once you mess around with the settings, it takes really good pictures. The casing doesnt pick up fingerprints at all, and it doesn't feel like it will be easy to scratch it up, the surface is like a rubbery material, and it is very easy to clean. One thing I am worried about though is the palm rest area, it looks as if it will start to fade after a while of good use like the old inspirons did. I included some pictures of my 1420 since its midnight blue and phobos512 ordered the black.

    Sweet Bosco congrats! :D

What specs is your 1420? does it make any noise while under load?

Also if it's not too much of a hassle for you, can you please tell me what is the screen(LCD only) size? width/height?

Oh and btw, can you please open some page that we can all view? like say even this thread on your laptop and take a picture of it?

Power and USB ports on the side was for me an ABSOLUTE requirement. After having spent many hours with my fiancée's e1505 and huge power plug sticking out the back digging into my leg on our couch (yes, we have 2 red couches, one big three cushion and then a 2 cushion love seat - Ashley brand, and discontinued - sorry folks) I wasn't going to deal with a power port on the back.

The finger prints on the black aren't too distinct but yeah, it will pick them up. I'm not sure what the other colors "feel" like but to me this has the kind of soft touch finish that I would expect from what people have said about the other colors (it feels very similar to the back of a Motorola KRZR if you've played with one of those ever).

    I'm back at work now...

I have the Intel 4965 Wireless-N card on a Linksys WRT54GLv5 running some off the wall custom firmware that I cannot recall right now...I ran IE, said there was no network, clicked the connect now button, typed in my WPA2-PSK key, and I was off and running. Took all of 10 seconds.

(What's weird is I thought I had my SSID set to not broadcast...going to have to check that tonight)

I selected the "No Software" option wherever possible. I had a popup for Google Desktop when I started which I said disagree to and it automatically uninstalled. I also have McAfee Security Center trial which will go away when I get home. I left it downloading Windows Updates.
