My 1420's hard drive is making a "clicking" sound (it sounds the the second hand on some watches) when it is not spinning. I know a humming sound is normal from a hard drive when it is spinning but is a clicking sound normal?

It is consitent like a metrodome almost, clicking once every second or two. It seems like every time the hard drive acess light blinks it clicks but the opposite (everytime it clicks he hard drive acess light blinks) is not always true.

sounds like a bad HDD. if you have any important info on there now get it off cause you may lose it. besides that, call Dell and get a new one sent.

While it usually does mean HDD death, and I would contact Dell, clicking doesn't always mean it's dying. I have a 500GB Seagate that clicks every now and then when accessing data, but that's just how it is, it's a noisy drive, and was confirmed by Seagate. I would still get a new one from Dell just to be safe though.

I thought my hard drive was clicking, then I realized it was just a Windows sound...

i have a seagate 120gb 5400 in my dell, that does this exact thing. Its just how it works.

kinda sounds like the head parking every 2-4 seconds. Nothing you can do about it. The drive is a ok for sure.

Yea, it's fine. If you're worried about HDD health, just run some transfer read/write benchmarks. As long as it's a general slope, you're good.
