What should I do? This isn't normal is it? I have an Alienware 9700 which doesn't do this at all.

Tilting the computer left\right when I pick it up, i here it go RRRAHAHHHHHEEEEE :p I took the cd out and I can see the scratches on it.

Should I contact dell cust service and tell them to send a new drive? I don't want to send the laptop back and have it fixed then wait 20 weeks grrr.

Is this even something I can complain about? Any other 1420 owners had this problem? maybe it's just normal for this laptop model to not be picked up while the dvd drive is spinning....

    Thanks guys.

Not sure. But I wouldn't be moving the laptop when there is something in the drive spinning that fast. On the other hand, your drive seems to be very sensitive.

I used to move my old HP ze4281 with a disc spinning in the drive. It didnt quite agree with it (made a few odd noises) but it didnt seem to hurt the CD.

I think if you do a search on the forum, or google it you will find that it's not unique, it's pretty common. And if I recall correctly, it's not just with Dell.

yeah my 360 does the same thing, it ruined a NFL game completely. But this *is* a notebook, it gets moved around while being powered on. :(

I also left the laptop on standby for 12 hours today (after 1 hour of use) and the battery discharged. :( that *cannot* be normal can it??

Yeah usually the manufacturers put a label or mention in their operating manuals that it is not advisable to move the laptop while there is a disc in the optical drive....

And so it is bound to happen if you move it around or shake it, tilt it, etc.... But still you can carefully move it gently around.....
