    Hey!

I had a XPS 1640 (not even a month old) have Complete care...well I accidentally dropped it..and it cracked the right side casing by the Battery Adapter Port, eSata, and DVD Drive Slot.. :( and the "crack" would have continued "down the side".

I contacted Dell Support via Chat, confirmed that mishaps like this were indeed covered and proceeded with my claim.

The Rep at first ordered a new Undercarriage, sides, and Palm Rest for my lappy ~ The next day the Onsite Technician contacted me to set up a time to replace the parts. And, in further discussion via Phone with him, he decided that there was much more "damage" based on what I was describing, and decided to contact Dell to order what summed up to "more Parts then Dell wanted to replace".

At that point they wanted to Depot for Repair. I strongly & firmly said No...The Technician suggested a replacement. And, in phone conversations "back n forth" w/technician & Dell...they decided to Replace with New.

I got lucky. I think with your laptop being as 3 years old. And, if you can describe the " extent", of the damage done to the lid. You might be able to get a replacement. They will ask you if beyond the extend of damage to the lid, on impact was your keyboard damaged? Palmrest? Hinges? LCD? They asked me questions like this. They were trying to see if due to the area of where my lappy fell..if there was any internal damage caused, etc. :)

Don't phone Dell..do it via Chat. You have so much more control with conversation (at least I have found it to be that way). ;)

    Hope that helps.

    Cin...

Well - Cin you got lucky- My daughters lap a d531- was sitting on a bookcase that the dog knocked over- the bookcase landed on the laptop. I described the damage- as - LCD, Frame, keyboard, palm rest and lower plastics, I asked for those parts to be sent for next day on site. Dell told me that this extensive damage would have to be depoted. I reisted, but Dell held firm- I sent it in- 10 days later i got an alert that the machine was coming back - i chatted with Dell to find out the details of the repair- I was told, LCD, keyboard, Frame, palmrest, Mobo - I thought that was alot of parts not to just replace- I asked for a manger since the lower case was not changed out- The manager asked why it needs to be replaced- I told him the machine has a wobble- Before i even got the machine back the manager set up a replacement-

When we got it back- the upper LCD shell was not snapped back together on one side. the lower shell was not snapped- right in the front middle- and there was a slight wobble still.... I snapped the lower back together and the left side of laptop was now 1/16th of inch off the table....
