I updated my video driver to the latest from Laptop2Go and it STILL gives me the stupid Invalid Video Mode error. No wonder people say this games is a POS port.

a desktop 8600GT gets about 25fps on near max setting at 1280* something resolution, 8600M GT is quite a bit worse than the desktop 8600GT and 8400M GS is quite a bit worse than the 8600M GT

And now I've tried ever video resolution the 1420 supports and I get the same error every time (even says 1280x720 each time).

Don't bother with the demo it's a major PITA to get working and the performance is absolutely dismal...Many forum posts say the real game is MUCH better performance wise. A screen at the start of the demo indicates that it is developmental and may not work properly.

I'm working on a review of a notebook with the 8400M-G right now. The Demo version runs best at default settings (640x360) with Trilinear filtering, medium HDR, and most other options at low or medium. Just FYI.

Any higher resolution kills the card, and those settings provide as much eye-candy as possible without dragging the FPS too low.
